The Supreme Court has ruled that Czechia’s system of storing electronic communications data seriously violates European Union law.
The court rejected an appeal by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, confirming that the ministry must apologise to journalist Jan Cibulka for unlawfully interfering with his right to privacy and protection of personal data.
The judges said the law allows for the preventive and indiscriminate retention of data on almost all users of electronic communications. They warned that the scope of the stored information makes it possible to draw sensitive conclusions about people’s private lives, failing to meet standards set by the EU’s top court.
The Supreme Court also reiterated that the state is liable for both financial and non-financial harm caused by the incorrect implementation of EU legislation.

President Petr Pavel and his wife Eva will visit the Vatican on Monday, January 19, where they will be received by Pope Leo the Fourteenth, the presidential office announced on Thursday. President Pavel will also meet the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
Pope Leo the Fourteenth was elected last May. President Pavel later invited him to visit Czechia, saying he believed the new pope would be a strong voice for those facing oppression, injustice and suffering caused by unjust aggression.
Last year, President Pavel also criticised a treaty between Czechia and the Vatican on the status of the Catholic Church. In a submission to the Constitutional Court, he said the agreement was unconstitutional and granted the Church a privileged position. A group of senators asked the court to review the treaty last March over possible human rights concerns.

Czechia and Slovakia will resume joint government consultations, with the next meeting of both cabinets set to take place in Czechia, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Thursday following talks with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš in Bratislava.
The consultations were suspended two years ago by the previous Czech government, which cited differing views on key foreign policy issues.
The announcement came during Babiš’s first official visit to Slovakia since taking office. The visit began with a military honours ceremony at the Slovak Government Office and follows a long-standing tradition of Czech and Slovak leaders making their first foreign trip to the other country.
Later today, the Bratislava-born Czech prime minister is also due to meet Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Parliamentary Speaker Richard Raši.

President Petr Pavel emphasised the need to align official foreign-policy statements so that they correspond to Czechia's foreign policy priorities and commitments, the Presidential Office reported after a New Year’s lunch between the president and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO). Pavel's statement comes in connection with the anti-Ukrainian New Year’s address by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Tomio Okamura (SPD) and the government’s stance on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine.
According to the Presidential Office, the president and the prime minister agreed to establish mechanisms for coordinating and sharing information on foreign and security policy, as well as to coordinate foreign trips.
However, Okamura again defended his New Year’s address before journalists, calling it excellent.

Consumer prices in Czechia rose by 2.1% in December, the same as in November. This is according to a preliminary estimate released on Wednesday by the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ). The inflation rate was slightly above that of the eurozone, which stood at 2%, according to Eurostat data.
Analysts say that steady prices for energy and food have helped keep overall inflation under control. However, they are concerned about the rise in service costs. While prices for goods in Czechia increased by 0.4% year-on-year, with the pace of growth easing slightly in December, service prices rose by 4.8%. As in previous months, the only category to see a fall in prices was energy, including fuel, which fell by an estimated 4.2%.
