The tripartite council of government representatives, trade unions and employers will meet on Monday for the first time in the current electoral term. The agenda includes the government’s policy statement, the draft state budget for this year and emissions allowances.
After the meeting, further talks are scheduled in the evening between cabinet representatives and union leaders on public sector pay rises. Trade unions are demanding a nine percent increase this year for lower-paid workers and civil servants, and a six percent rise for others.
The government rejected the EU’s ETS2 emissions trading system at its first meeting on 16 December and asked Czech MEPs to seek allies against it.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš earlier signaled that the salaries of teachers, police officers, soldiers, civil servants and other state employees will rise from January, despite Czechia entering the year on a provisional budget.

MP and honorary president of the Motorists’ party Filip Turek said on Monday that he could become a “government commissioner for the Green Deal” at the Ministry of the Environment, a role through which he would work on the ministry’s key agendas. Turek, whom President Petr Pavel refused to appoint as minister, made the remarks upon arriving at a meeting of coalition leaders on Monday.
According to him, the ministry cannot run on autopilot. While Macinka is currently handling the agenda, Turek said this would not be beneficial in the long term and that the ministry needs someone to lead it.
Talks will also focus on an upcoming vote of confidence in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. Some SPD lawmakers have linked their support to ending Czech involvement in an ammunition initiative for Ukraine, though Babiš says the country will stay involved without direct funding.
The vote of confidence in the new government is expected to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Finance Minister Alena Schillerová, the ANO party deputy leader, said it would be very difficult to keep the 2026 state budget deficit below 300 billion crowns, as ministers have been ordered to cut spending. Speaking on Czech TV she said the draft prepared by the previous government underestimated both revenues and expenditures, leaving the country in budgetary provisional management. According to Vladimír Pikora of the Motorists’ party, some ministries are cutting close to ten percent of operating costs. National Budget Council chairman Mojmír Hampl warned the planned deficit would breach fiscal responsibility rules.

The Motorists’ party plans further steps in its dispute with President Petr Pavel over the nomination of Filip Turek as environment minister, party leader Petr Macinka said on Sunday. Speaking on CNN Prima News, Macinka declined to specify the moves but ruled out filing a constitutional lawsuit, arguing that lawmakers—not judges—should decide how governments are formed. Macinka insisted that Turek should still take the post and said an office is being prepared for him, while Macinka continues to run the ministry temporarily. Opposition figures criticised the president’s refusal, while others said the government could challenge Pavel’s decision in court. Turek has announced a personal lawsuit seeking an apology.
