Moderate, cultured, and impartial –those are the main traits that Czechs would like to see in their next head of state, according to the outcome of a flash poll conducted for Seznam.cz. Forty percent  of respondents would do away with the president’s prerogative to grant pardons without limitations, and about the same number would give the head of state the right to propose new laws. People also want the head of state to represent the country well abroad, and unite the nation rather than dividing people with provocative, strong statements. More than three quarters of respondents said that the gender of the future head of state is not decisive.

Presidential candidate Senator Marek Hilšer has rejected calls for him to withdraw from the presidential race and support either Petr Pavel or Danuše Nerudová in order to boost their chances of beating Andrej Babis in the first round of the presidential elections. Senator Hilšer said on Monday that he would remain in the race and presented his presidential priorities in a document titled Vision Czechia 2030. He said people should vote for a vision, not chose the lesser evil. Senator Pavel Fischer, who heard a similar appeal, has also decided to stay in the race.

The case against former prime minister and presidential candidate Andrej Babiš which resumed briefly on Monday at the Prague Municipal Court has been postponed until the beginning of January. The ANO leader is accused of wrongfully acquiring around 50 million crowns in EU subsidies by misrepresenting the size of the Stork’s Nest conference centre near Prague and forging his son’s signature to accomplish this goal. An expert who testified on Monday was indecisive as to whether the signature of Andrej Babiš junior could have been signed by his father, but did not rule out the possibility. The ANO opposition leader denied the accusations in an emotional testimony, claiming he was a good father and had not abused his son’s mental health problems. The trial was put off at the request of the defense.

The court hearing will resume at the start of January and the court could deliver a verdict just days before the presidential elections, in which Mr. Babiš is contesting, take place. Lawyers say that if Mr. Babiš is elected head of state, then criminal proceedings against him would have to be suspended for the duration of his term of office.

The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, says that Vítězslav Pivoňka will remain the country’s ambassador to Russia. Speaking on Czech Television on Sunday, Mr. Lipavský said that Jiří Čistecký would serve as deputy ambassador at the Moscow embassy.

News site Seznam Zprávy reported last month that Mr. Pivoňka was to be replaced by Mr. Čistecký, though the latter would have the job title of chargé d'affaires, not ambassador.

Mr. Lipavský said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Prague was for now not planning to replace the position of ambassador with that of chargé d’affaires.

Czech President Miloš Zeman says he would like to visit Serbia in January or February and would like to open a Czech House in Belgrade during the trip. The head of state, whose term ends in March, made the comment on CNN Prima News on Sunday.

He also said that he had proposed to Prime Minister Petr Fiala that the pair fly to Israel together and open a Czech Embassy in Jerusalem.

However, the foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, said recently that Czechia adheres to a UN Security Council resolution as well as the unified position of the EU when it comes to the possible relocation of its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem; the EU is opposed to such moves and does not recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

Mr. Zeman also said he would support Andrej Babiš to succeed him as the ANO leader is the only experienced politician among the frontrunners.
