    Just over 325,000 Ukrainian refugees with temporary protection status were present in Czechia at the start of this month, the Czech Ministry of the Interior’s Department of Asylum and Migration Policy said on Wednesday. The number includes Ukrainians who have extended previously granted visas and those who have applied for the first time this year.

    Two-thirds of the refugees are women. Prague, Brno and Plzeň are the Czech cities hosting the most people with the special status, which allows them access to public health insurance, education and the labour market.

    The Czech minister of foreign affairs, Jan Lipavský, says that the example of Finland shows that if a state is ready to join NATO the accession process can be very fast. He said the Finnish story served as a message and motivation for other aspirants.

    Mr. Lipavský made the comment after a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels in which Finland participated for the first time since joining the alliance this week.

    The Czech foreign policy chief also backed continued support for Ukraine until its territorial integrity was completely restored within its internationally recognised borders.

    Czechia is planning to provide between CZK 600 million and CZK 700 million in military aid to Ukraine, the country’s defence minister, Jana Černochová, said after a meeting with President Petr Pavel on Wednesday.

    The minister provided the head of state with a list of the materiel, which comprises unrequired items from Czech Army stores, along with a list of military aid supplied to Ukraine to date.

    Ms. Černochová said supplying the planned aid to the Kyiv government would not impact Czechia’s ability to defend itself.

    Czechia has been a major per capita donor to Ukraine since Russia invaded the country last year.

    Part of a nail believed to have come from the so-called True Cross, discovered in a Premonstratensian monastery in South Bohemia in December 2020, will be displayed to the public for the first time.

    The six-inch-long piece of nail, believed to be part of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified, was discovered by archaeologists in a box in a cavity in the vault of the Milevsko monastery. It will be exhibited in the Prácheň Museum in Písek on Friday as part of an exhibition running until April 16.

    President Petr Pavel will receive members of foreign diplomatic corps working in Czechia at Prague Castle on Wednesday. The meeting with foreign diplomats is usually held on the occasion of Czechoslovak Independence Day, October 28. However, the new head of state decided to meet with the ambassadors not long after his inauguration, just like his predecessor, Miloš Zeman, did ten years ago.

    Renáta Kellnerová, widow of the late billionaire Petr Kellner, who died in a plane crash in the US two years ago, is the wealthiest Czech and 101st wealthiest person in the world, according to an annual rich list published by Forbes on Tuesday. The market value of her assets is estimated at CZK 355.9 billion.

    Second on the magazine’s list is Daniel Křetínský, the majority owner of Energetický a průmyslový holding (EPH), whose property is estimated at CZK 198.5 billion. Karel Komárek placed third with assets estimated at CZK 174.7 billion.For the first time, 11 Czechs made it to the world ranking of dollar billionaires compiled by Forbes.

    The Czech foreign minister, Jan Lipavský, and his Israeli counterpart, Eli Kohen, have confirmed their commitment to developing a strategic partnership. Speaking at a press conference after a meeting between the two in Prague on Tuesday, the Czech diplomatic chief also thanked Kohen for his humanitarian support to Ukraine.

    Mr. Lipavský said cooperation on trade, security and science and research between the two countries should be deepened. He also said the ninth meeting of a Czech-Israeli expert forum would be held in Tel Aviv in May, this time focusing on sustainable energy.

    The best-selling American writer Robert Fulghum is among the high-profile guests set to attend the upcoming 28th edition of the annual Book World Prague, the organizers announced on Tuesday. Also set to attend is the Russian novelist Vladimir Sorokin.

    This year, the guest of honour is not a specific country but authors transgressing national borders. For the first time the festival will host a two-day Central and East European Book Market.

    Around 30 countries will be represented at the fair and festival, due to take place from May 11 to 14.
