    The Czech Embassy in Slovenia has no reports of any injuries or deaths of Czech citizens in connection with the floods in the eastern parst of the country, the Czech Foreign Ministry reported. However, some Czechs were stranded in their accommodation facilities and several had to be evacuated by helicopter. According to the ministry, Ambassador Juraj Chmiel is in contact with five Czechs who are stranded by the floods in their holiday resorts, and is providing whatever assistance is needed.

    Torrential rain caused a dam to break on the Mura River in the east of the country, necessitating the evacuation of several villages.  According to local sources 500 people in the municipality of Dolnja Bistrica, among others, had to leave their homes. More than 200 Czechs are registered in Slovenia according to the ministry’s travel registration system Drozd.

    No.4 seed Linda Nosková raced into her second career Hologic WTA Tour final with a 6-1, 6-1 rout of qualifier Tamara Korpatsch at the Livesport Prague Open on Sunday. Nosková's win ensures an eighth final with at least one Czech presence. She has the opportunity to become the sixth home champion, following Karolina Plíšková (2015), Lucie Šafářová (2016), Petra Kvitová (2018), Barbora Krejčíková (2021) and Marie Bouzkova (2022).

    Czechia has offered to assist the peace plan for Ukraine, which was debated in Jeddah on Saturday, mainly in the areas of nuclear safety and prosecution of Russian war crimes, the head of the Czech delegation to the talks, Deputy Foreign Minister Jan Marian told reporters. He said Czech participation in the consultations reflected the country’s strong and long-standing support for Ukraine. Representatives of 40 countries attended the talks, to which Russia was not invited.

    On the sidelines of the conference, the Czech delegate held talks with representatives of Canada, Britain, South Korea and the head of the Ukrainian president's office, Andriy Jermak.

    A heavy rainfall warning remains in place until midday Monday. The warning pertains particularly to the northeast of the country where around 70 millimetres of rain has fallen since Saturday night and up to 35 millimetres more could fall by Monday morning. The heavy rainfall has been swelling smaller streams and rivers and uprooting trees in the area. The warning is valid in parts of the Vysočina, Liberec, Hradec Kralove, Pardubice, Olomouc, Moravian-Silesian and Zlín regions.

    Czech archer Marie Horáčková won gold at the 2023 World Archery Championships in Berlin this weekend, becoming the first archery world champion in the country’s modern history. Twenty-five-year-old Horáčková defeated five opponents in the German capital after finishing seventh in the qualification. The victory guarantees Horáčková participation in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Eighty-five years ago archer Frantishek Hadas won gold for Czechoslovakia.

    Representatives of the Brno Observatory and Planetarium and the artistic group VISUALOVE have set a new Czech record by creating the largest collection of inflatable models of space bodies. For this year’s Planet Festival in the Moravian metropolis they prepared five inflatable models of the Sun, Moon, Mars and two of Planet Earth with a diameter of 10 metres each. The record-breaking collection, which has been in the making since 2019, was displayed in the park on Kraví hora in Brno and attracted thousands of visitors.

    Close to 400 Czechs and Germans attended a cross-border “picnic” in the town of Domažlice on Saturday afternoon, bringing Czech and German specialties to a hundred-meter long row of tables set out on the town’s main square. The event, organized by the Ackermann-Gemeinde association, is aimed at fostering good-neighbour cross-border relations and the organizers said they were delighted with the turnout. The participants heard greetings from the local mayor Stanislav Antoš, President Petr Pavel, Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák and local priest Miroslaw Grieg.

    Inflation continues to decline in Czechia and dropped to below 9 percent in July, down from 9.7 in June, according to analysts polled by the ctk news agency. The declining trend continued largely due to the so-called “base-effect”, since consumer prices rose compared to the previous month, mainly thanks to high recreational service costs.

    In June inflation dropped below the 10 percent mark for the first time since January 2022. The Czech Statistics Office will issue official data on July inflation on Thursday.

    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky has condemned the attack on a blood transfusion centre in Ukraine's Kharkiv region, that killed three people and injured several others. Those responsible for the atrocity must be brought to justice and Czechia will do everything it can to ensure this, Lipavsky wrote on Twitter.

    During talks in Jeddah on a peace plan for Ukraine, Czechia offered assistance mainly in the areas of nuclear safety and prosecution of Russian war crimes.
