The case of a Romany man, who died in June 2021 after being restrained by police officers is headed to the European Court of Human Rights. Lawyers for the European Roma Rights Centre and the Forum for Human Rights filed a lawsuit against Czechia over his death, the website Romea.cz reported on Thursday. The Czech Constitutional Court rejected the organizations’ constitutional complaint in April 2023.

The 46-year-old man collapsed on the pavement shortly after police restrained him by kneeling on his neck and died in an ambulance shortly after. The General Inspectorate of the Security Forces closed its investigation into the case last year, saying the police officers had not committed a crime and that the cause of the man’s death was heart failure caused by a heavy drug overdose.

Police chief Martin Vondrášek has apologised for statements he made in a video interview for Czech news site Aktuálně.cz on Monday saying that women's reports of sexual violence are very often fabricated. The police chief told the newspaper Právo on Thursday that he was sorry if his words had caused distress to victims of sexual violence and that had not been his intention.

He has received criticism from many sides since he made the statements on Monday, including from lawyers, NGOs, Interior Minister Vít Rakušan, and Government Commissioner for Human Rights Klára Šimáčková Laurenčíková. Prior to his apology in Právo, he had stated on the police's website that he had not meant to trivialize the issue of sexual violence in any way and claimed that his statements were being taken out of context.

Interest in new-build apartments in Prague has increased by 50 percent in the first half of this year compared to the second half of last year, according to an analysis published on Wednesday by three development companies. The developers attribute this spike in demand to the slowing of the inflation and interest rates and a gradual reduction in energy costs.

The price of new apartments is also stagnating. However, the developers say that the supply of new apartments is still insufficient to meet demand, which may drive prices up again in the future.

Seven out of ten Ukrainian refugees in Czechia live below the income poverty line, according to a study by PAQ research published on Wednesday. Households with children were found to be most at risk.

While two-thirds of refugees over the age of 17 have jobs, most are working in jobs that they are over-qualified for, often in precarious conditions. The main barriers to them getting better jobs, the study found, are insufficient knowledge of the Czech language and the unavailability of preschool care for children.

The Czech police have extradited the man nicknamed "Guru Jára", who has been on the run since 2012 to avoid serving a prison sentence for a rape conviction. He has been extradited via Taipei to a Prague prison from the Philippines, where he fled in 2015.

"Guru Jára", whose real name is Jaroslav Dobeš, faces 5.5 years in prison for pressuring his female pupils into having ritualised sex with him under the pretence of offering lessons in yoga and Eastern philosophy. He was arrested in the Philippines in 2015, but the final decision on his extradition took the local authorities over seven years, as the man took advantage of all the available possibilities for appeal and judicial review.
