Czech Republic Prime Minister Andrej Babiš says the country could get almost CZK 75 billion (2.8 billion euros) more than anticipated from the EU Renewal Fund and in the next multi-annual budget.

Speaking early on Sunday morning as EU leaders met in Brussels for what turned out to be a third day of meetings, Babiš noted that the final amount could change.

But he said the that Czechs had negotiated the highest subsidies of all EU countries, much of which will go towards regional development.

Some EU member states believe the proposed 750 billion euro recovery package, to mitigate the economic impact of the coronavirus crisis, is too large. Other, such as the Netherlands, Austria, Sweden and Denmark, insist most funds be dispersed as loans rather than grants.

The American pharmaceutical company Novavax  plans to produce an eventual anti-coronavirus vaccine at its Czech plant in Bohumil.

But Roman Prymula, an epidemiologist and government commissioner for health research, told Czech television individual doses may be filled in Germany, where a booster substance made in Sweden will be added.

Novavax bought the company Praha Vaccines in May to gain the capacity to produce over 1 billion doses of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate.

The company received the Trump administration’s largest vaccine contract although Novavax has never brought a vaccine to market in its 33-year history.

Its technology uses moth cells to produce crucial molecules at a much faster rate than typical vaccines, a big advantage in a pandemic.

Dozens of students demonstrated on Wenceslas Square in Prague on Saturday in support of Russia artist and LGBT+ activist Yulia Tsvetkova, who faces charges of spreading pornography.

A Russian court found the 26-year-old activist guilty of “promoting non-traditional sexual relations between minors” a week ago, imposing a fine against her. If found guilty on the pornography charge, she faces up to six years in prison.

Tsvetkova gained prominence on social networks for her poetic illustrations inspired by “The Vagina Monologues”, an episodic off-Broadway play. Amnesty International has labeled her a prisoner of conscience.

The Moscow Times recently likened the Russian authorities' interest in her to politically motivated legal action taken against activists from Pussy Riot and opposition figures.

Monument curators are looking to prevent alterations to some Communist-era prefab apartment blocks in northern Bohemia, possibly by designating them as protected monuments.

Buildings under consideration include some in Most, a centre of mining, which have a unique feature: architects accounted for wind patterns to ensure inhabitants had the cleanest air possible.

Most prefabricated buildings in the Czech Republic, known as paneláks, were built between the 1960s and 1980s. Today more than three million Czechs live in them.

The Czech women's association Vesna, whose origins date back to 1870, has gone bankrupt. Instead of celebrating the 150th anniversary of its founding, the Brno non-profit is meeting with creditors in late August, Commercial and Insolvency Register documents show.

Initially established as a girls’ choir, Vesna grew to focus on educating girls and women in the Czech language and providing lessons in Czech, history, teaching, pedagogy, and practical handiwork.

Vesna soon became a major educational institution, cooperating with various cultural figures, including Leoš Janáček, who gave lectures there. His daughter Olga attended the institution and his wife Zdenka helped organise some activities. By 1918, Vesna had built 13 schools.

Until at least 2018, Vesna was organising regular courses, exhibitions, lectures, trips and suburban camps for girls. The Regional Court in Brno ruled Vesna bankrupt in June and gave other creditors two months to file claims. A review and subsequent creditors’ meeting is scheduled for 31 August.

The Czech government is set on Monday to discuss ensuring the issuance of ID cards and residence permits with biometric data – two images of the holder’s fingerprints and photographs on a contactless chip.

The Interior Ministry proposes amending the existing contract with the State Printing House of Securities. The move responds to a European Parliament regulation due to enter into force in August 2021, as part of anti-terrorism measures.

Newly issued biometric cards will be valid for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 years. They must include a machine-readable part and meet safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.
