Czech gov’t to discuss issuance of ID cards with biometric data (fingerprints)

The Czech government is set on Monday to discuss ensuring the issuance of ID cards and residence permits with biometric data – two images of the holder’s fingerprints and photographs on a contactless chip.

The Interior Ministry proposes amending the existing contract with the State Printing House of Securities. The move responds to a European Parliament regulation due to enter into force in August 2021, as part of anti-terrorism measures.

Newly issued biometric cards will be valid for a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 years. They must include a machine-readable part and meet safety standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.
