The next school year is due to begin in the Czech Republic on the usual date, September 1. However, special hygiene provisions will be in place to counter the spread of Covid-19, the minister of education, Robert Plaga, said on Tuesday as he outlined plans for the upcoming academic year. Mr. Plaga said schools would follow a new national “traffic light” system under which the coronavirus risk is assessed in different parts of the country on the basis of several factors.
The minister said all pupils would attend school from the start of September. Classes will not be split up into smaller groups to combat the virus, but hand sanitizers will be used and classrooms will be aired more often.
If there is an outbreak of Covid-19 at a school, it will proceed on the basis of instructions from local hygiene officials. The latter will also rule on whether facemasks should be worn.

The Czech government and the semi-state energy company CEZ have signed a contract regarding the planned building of a new unit at Dukovany, one of the country’s two nuclear power stations. In addition to an umbrella deal, the two sides also signed a contract that defines the zoning permit for the site of the construction as well as the selection of a supplier by 2024.
CEZ CEO Daniel Beneš said the power giant would like to select a company to build the unit by the end of 2022. The tender for the job should be published in December this year.

The Czechs will face Slovakia in Bratislava on September 4 before playing Scotland in Olomouc three days later.
The Czech Football Association said on Tuesday that it would not sell tickets for the Scotland match but would be able to respond immediately if UEFA changed its position.

The Ministry for Regional Development has withdrawn a plan to spend CZK 2 billion on a campaign aimed at persuading Czechs to vacation domestically, the Czech News Agency said. The idea was slammed by the opposition, who said such a huge advertising drive would in fact be a form of support for media outlets, some of which were bought by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš. The ministry has now recalled the project from a government comments procedure and says it will work on it further.
The original plan was for advertising spending of CZK 700 million on TV stations, CZK 400 million on print media outlets and the same amount on websites.

The Czech brewing industry lost over CZK 4.7 billion from March to May due to the coronavirus situation and associated government measures, according to a study conducted by the Centre for Economic and Market Analyses. The closure of restaurants and pubs had the greatest impact, with such businesses selling 728,000 fewer hectoliters of beer in the three-month period. However, there was also an increase in sales of beer in shops during the lockdown.
One of the study’s authors told the Czech News Agency that the losses would also impact the state budget, due to a decline in both VAT collection and excise duty on beer.

The Ministry of the Interior has prepared four potential methods of voting while in quarantine ahead of Senate and regional elections in October. These include drive-in voting, special polling stations at places such as nursing homes, the possibility of voting by proxy and a commission that would collect ballot papers at people’s homes. The minister of the interior, Jan Hamáček, said on Tuesday that he favoured all of the methods being approved, thus making it possible to adapt to a variety of situations.
The matter should be decided by the government at a meeting in mid-August with a view to election commissioners receiving training the following month.
Mr. Hamáček, who rejects the idea of postal ballots, says voting by proxy is likely to be the most contentious proposal. -

The Czech government will turn to the European Commission for assistance in resolving the Czech-Polish controversy over the planned expansion of the Turów brown coal mine located in the close proximity to the Czech border, Environment Minister Richard Brabec told the ctk news agency. The expansion was approved by the Polish authorities, despite Czech concerns that it would threaten water sources for villages on the Czech side, as well as severely increasing noise and dust pollution.
The Czech-Polish dispute goes back to 2016 when the Czech Republic first protested against the planned expansion requesting information on the impact on water resources, agricultural land and other habitats, as well as air and noise pollution on the Czech side of the border.
Efforts to halt the project have been unsuccessful, with Poland arguing that adequate measures were being taken to protect inhabitants and land on the Czech side of the border from any negative side effects. The Czech Republic has said it is ready to take the matter to the European Court of Justice if a solution is not found.

Several hundred people gathered on Prague’s Old Town Square on Monday to protest against what they feel to be excessive coronavirus restrictions and their negative impact on live cultural events. The initiative #zazivouhudbu (forlivemusic) pointed to the fact that dozens of live concerts and festivals have had to be cancelled, some at the last minute, leaving many artists and organizations in financial straits.
Culture Minister Lubomír Zaorálek said he was actively looking for ways to help the cultural scene, but said people must remain realistic. The restrictions on live cultural events are likely to remain in place at least until the end of this year and people must learn to live with that, he said. He dismissed the demand for the government to lift the ceiling on the number of people at public events to 5,000 people as totally unrealistic.
