Over 50,000 refugees from Ukraine have already started work in the Czech Republic, according to data from the Czech Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. The humanitarian year-long visas refugees receive guarantee them the same status on the labour market as Czech citizens or permanent residents. Most of them have reportedly filled long-term vacancies.
According to the Interior Ministry data, some 345,200 refugees have so far been granted special visas in the Czech Republic. Nearly two fifths of that number are children.

Czechs are more willing to spend on premium healthcare, according to the data by the European Statistics Office, Eurostat.
Last year, premium healthcare expenses accounted for 2.8 percent of overall household spending, which is still considerably less than in Western countries.
On average, Czechs pay more than CZK 7,000 a year for healthcare, compared to around CZK 5,000 a decade ago. In comparison, the average expenses for alcohol and cigarettes account for over eight percent of Czech households’ budget.

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer is ready to support the expansion of the capacity of the TAL pipeline, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Tuesday, adding that this would ensure the Czech Republic would have sufficient capacity in case it cannot use oil from Russia.
Speaking at a joint press conference after their meeting in Prague on Tuesday, the Czech and Austrian politicians also said the upcoming Czech EU Council presidency should focus, among other things, on the Western Balkans and its integration in the EU.
Mr Fiala said that progress in the Western Balkans countries’ EU integration was in the interest of both Czechia and Austria.

Czech athlete Zuzana Hejnová, a two-time world champion in the 400 metres hurdles, has announced the end of her career. The 35-year-old is expecting her first baby, she said in a press release on Tuesday.
Hejnová, one of the most successful Czech female athletes of recent years, won the bronze medal at the London Olympics in 2012 and was twice voted the Czech sports personality of the year. She has not been competing in the past two years due to health problems.

Hungarian government’s decision not to support any sanctions against Russian energy export is unacceptable, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský wrote on Twitter on Tuesday.
EU states on Monday once again failed to finalise an embargo on Russian oil imports as Hungary maintained its veto on a proposal which is intended to undermine Russia’s financial ability to wage its war against Ukraine.
The ban on crude imports proposed by the European Commission in early May would be its harshest sanction yet in response to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
The embargo is planned to take effect as of 2023. Hungary and Slovakia have been given an exemption until the end of 2024, while Czechia until mid-2024.

One of the Czech Republic’s most popular actors, Josef Abrhám, has died at the age of 82, news site Blesk.cz reported on Tuesday citing actor Jan Kačer. Often cast to play handsome, seductive characters, Abrhám was perhaps most famous for his roles as chief physician Blažej in the hit 1970s and 1980s TV series Hospital at the End of the City, or as Dalibor Vrána in the 1981 film Waiter, Scarper!.
Josef Abrhám was married to Czech actress Libuše Šafránková, who was made famous by her role of Cinderella in the 1970s fairy-tale Tři oříšky pro Popelku. Šafránková died almost exactly a year ago, in June 2021.

Qatari Emir Tamím bin Hamad Ál Thání will visit the Czech Republic at the turn of September to October this year, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Monday after meeting with President Zeman. The Czech government is hoping to sign an investment agreement with Qatar, the Czech News Agency reports.

Bodies of three men who were shot dead have been discovered near Makariv, in the Bucha Raion of the Kyiv Region in Ukraine. Documents, found in one of the unmarked graves, showed that one of the victims had Czech citizenship, Ukrainian online newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda reported on Tuesday. The Czech was a truck driver who was active in Ukraine as a volunteer, news site Novinky.cz reported, citing Kyiv Police.
The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs is aware of the case and is in contact with the victim’s family, but did not wish to offer any comment at this time.

The Czech Republic would like to coordinate evidence gathering with other states that are investigating war crimes in Ukraine, Justice Minister Pavel Blažek said on Monday after a meeting with the head of the International Criminal Court. Prague’s High State Attorney Lenka Bradáčová, who was also present at the meeting, said that it cannot be ruled out that war crimes committed during the Russian invasion of Ukraine will be subject to a special tribunal.
War crimes are currently being investigated on three levels – by Ukraine, by other European states and by the International Criminal Court. The subject of the meeting between ICC President Piotr Hofmański and the Czech officials was how to make cooperation across the three levels more effective. Mr Blažek said that effective coordination is necessary in order to avoid duplicity which could then in turn be used by the defence.
The Czech Minister also said that his country could try to lobby for a unified investigation within the European Union during its EU presidency which starts in July.
