The Czech government has approved a request to extend by 30 days a state of emergency imposed to help deal with a wave of Ukrainian refugees, Prime Minister Petr Fiala said after a cabinet meeting. The issue must now be considered by the lower house, with a special session set for Thursday afternoon. Without an extension the current state of emergency will end on May 31.

Government officials say the legal mechanism allows for faster and more effective relief efforts, including the provision of accommodation. Around 200,000 Ukrainian refugees are believed to be in the country.

Danish studio Bjarke Ingels Group has won the international architectural competition for the design of the new philharmonic concert hall in Prague. The results were announced on Tuesday evening.

The new cultural centre with three halls, which should also be the seat of the Czech Philharmonic and the Prague Symphony orchestra, is to stand near the Vltavská metro station in the Holešovice district. The cost is estimated at about six billion crowns and should be completed by 2032.

The construction is part of a larger plan to revitalize the neglected part of the Holešovice neighbourhood, known as Bubny-Zátory, and turn it into a brand new city district.
