    The Czech national team kicked off the 2022 IIHF Hockey World Championships with a 5:1 victory against Great Britain on Saturday. The Czech Republic and Great Britain are in Group B alongside top-seeded USA and Finland, as well as Austria, who advanced to the tournament after Russia was expelled. The Czech Republic is the third-most successful country in the history of the IIHF hockey World Championships after Canada and Russia.

    The authorities have started moving Ukrainian refugees from Prague’s main railway station to a tent city  in the city’s Troja district. The tent city was erected by firefighters on Thursday night to provide basic living conditions for the large number of predominantly Romany refugees camping out at Prague’s main railway station. It will provide beds for 150 people. They are expected to stay in Troja until a screening process reveals whether they are eligible for humanitarian visas. Some of them reportedly have Hungarian citizenship which means they would not be entitled to a visa.

    Two-thirds of Czech employees expect to get a pay rise this year, according to a survey conducted in April by the Hays agency. Sixteen percent of respondents said they had already received a pay rise this year, while 27 percent said they expected one in the coming months. Twenty-six percent of respondents are currently changing jobs and expect better financial terms in their new position. Thirty-one percent of respondents do not expect to get a pay increase this year. Inflation in Czechia has seen a steep rise and has now reached 14 percent.

    Close to 36,000 refugees from Ukraine have already started work in the Czech Republic, according to data from the Czech Labour Office. The humanitarian year-long visas refugees receive guarantee them the same status on the labour market as Czech citizens or permanent residents. Most of them are reportedly looking for short-term jobs because they hope to be able to return home soon. According to the Interior Ministry, 332,347 refugees have so far been granted special visas in the Czech Republic.

    Prague Castle will open to the public on Saturday after a two-year break caused by the Covid pandemic. People will be able to see, for example, the Spanish Hall and the Rudolf Gallery. A special program with falconers, horses and hunting dogs has been prepared in the Royal Gardens. The premises will be open to visitors from 10 am to 5 pm.

    The first phase of an extensive reconstruction of Prague’s Barrandov Bridge is due to begin on Monday, May 16. Preparatory work is already underway with road workers marking restrictions and detours. During the repairs, drivers will be able to use three lanes in each direction instead of four. Workers will first repair the southern part of the bridge together with the ramp from Strakonická Street. Drivers have been warned to expect long delays .The reconstruction is spread out over several years. The bridge, built in 1983, is part of the city ring road and is used by 140,000 drivers daily. It has not undergone reconstruction to date.

    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský will attend a two-day informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin at the weekend. The debate will focus on the repercussion of the Russian war in Ukraine and the worsened security situation. The foreign ministers of Sweden and Finland, which may soon apply to join NATO, have also been invited to the German capital. Turkey is not in favour of the two Nordic countries joining NATO and Ankara’s opposition would block the accession process. A joint working dinner is on the agenda.

    Prague’s Charles Bridge will light up on Friday and Saturday to mark the International Day of Light. Laser beams in the colours of Ukrainian Flag will connect the two towers of the bridge between 8 pm to midnight to mark the International Day of Light.

    The event, organised Prague’s Signal Festival of light art in cooperation with the ELI Beamlines international research centre, is meant to highlight the role of science.

    The International Day of Light is celebrated on May 16, when the first laser beam was fired by American physicist and engineer Theodore Maiman.
