    Some two thousand farmers gathered in Prague on Wednesday to protest against the Czech government’s new subsidy policy. After a meeting in the Lucerna palace in the morning, they marched to the seat of the government.

    The event was called by the Chamber of Agriculture, the Farmers’ Union and trade union associations, who say the new system discriminates larger farmers. The demonstration has been criticised by the country’s Association of Private Farming, which is in favour of the changes.

    Czech carmaker Škoda Auto will resume supplies of vehicles to Ukraine in June and deliver 80 cars which will be assembled at the plant of Škoda's business partner Eurocar in Ukraine's Solomonovo, the company's communication head Tomáš Kotěra told the Czech news Agency on Wednesday.

    Škoda suspended supplies to Ukraine in March due to the Russian invasion. It has also halted all activities in Russia as well as its exports to the country, which is one of Škoda’s most important global markets.

    Hungarian President Katalin Novák, who is currently on a state visit to the Czech Republic, held talks with Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Wednesday. The two politicians discussed cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, defence and energy, and the priorities of the upcoming Czech EU Presidency, the Office of the Government announced on Twitter.

    On Tuesday, the Hungarian head of state met with her Czech counterpart Miloš Zeman and she also held talks with ANO party leader and former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.

    Unemployment fell to 3.2 percent in May, a decrease of 0.1 percent when compared with the previous month, data published by the Czech Republic’s Labour Office on Wednesday show. In year-on-year terms, unemployment fell by 0.7 percent.

    Labour market statistics are currently being affected by seasonal work in sectors such as gastronomy, construction, agriculture and tourism, the director of the Labour Office, Viktor Najmon, said. He expects unemployment to continue falling in the coming months precisely due to this factor. However, he said that al is dependent on how the war in Ukraine develops and on the impact of the energy crisis on businesses.

    Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala was hosted by France’s President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Tuesday, where the two leaders discussed the situation related to Russia’s war on Ukraine and the upcoming EU presidency of the Czech Republic, which the country will take over from France next month.

    President Macron thanked the Czech Republic for supporting Ukraine and accepting Ukrainian refugees. Mr Fiala said that both he and the French head of state agreed that the exclusive blame for the war lies on the Russian side, which is the aggressor in the conflict, and that it is necessary to continue to support Ukraine.

    Energy security and weaning off energy dependency on Russia was discussed as well, with both leaders agreeing that nuclear power and its development is in the strategic interest of the two countries. Prime Minister Fiala called France a “key partner” in this respect.

    Czech National Team coach Jaroslav Šilhavý has chosen to replace injured winger Jakub Jankto with forward Stanislav Tecl in the squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League games against Portugal and Spain, news site iSport.cz reported on Tuesday.

    Jakub Jankto, who currently plays for Spanish side Getafe, injured himself in the first half of Sunday’s 2:2 game against Spain and had to be carried away on a stretcher. The manager of the national side, Tomáš Pešír, said that the player will not be fit in time for the upcoming games.

    31-year-old forward Stanislav Tecl, who scored six league goals playing for Slavia this past season, has thus far had six appearances for the national team, but is yet to net a goal.

    The Czechs are set to play two away matches this week. The first on Thursday against Portugal, after which they will face off against Spain on Sunday.

    Booster vaccines against Covid-19 will be covered by health insurance for everyone at least during the period of this autumn, Health Minister Vlastimil Válek told the Czech News Agency on Tuesday. The ideal time for a booster shot, especially for at-risk groups in society, will be from the end of August to mid-October, he said.

    The Health Ministry is currently negotiating a method of purchasing the relevant vaccines via a system that would be common across the EU. These talks should be concluded by July, the minister said. Benefits for those who get the vaccine, which were implemented last year, will not be put into place during this autumn season.

    The Czech government has proposed two options for wage growth in the public sector to unions, but neither is sufficient to cover the rapid rise of inflation, the spokesman of public sector unions Pavel Bednář told the Czech News Agency on Tuesday after meeting with representatives of the state executive. He said that the current stance of the government is unacceptable to the unions with the difference being only that one option is worse than the other, but refused to offer more detail on what they are.

    The relevant trade unions are demanding a raise to be implemented from July in order to prevent a full in purchasing power. According to the Czech Statistics Agency, public sector workers’ real wages have been impacted the hardest this year so far, falling by an average of 8.4 percent. Negotiations with the government are expected to continue.

    Hungarian President Katalin Novák, who is currently on a state visit to the Czech Republic, met with Czech President Miloš Zeman at Prague Castle on Tuesday morning. The two heads of state discussed cooperation within the Visegrad Four, which President Zeman said should not be weakened.

    Societal questions were also discussed, with the Czech president saying that he would veto a law allowing same sex marriage. An amendment that would allow gay marriage has been proposed by individual MPs from five parties represented in the Chamber of Deputies.

    President Novák is set to meet with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Wednesday.

    The Czech Republic sent a cargo train of 38 carriages primarily carrying medical and firefighting equipment as well as workwear to Ukraine on Tuesday morning, the head of the Czech Fire Rescue Service’s Communications Department Tomáš Pořízek announced in a press release.

    A part of the cargo is being sent to Ukraine’s Ministry of Health. It includes 3.64 million disposable gloves and around 500,000 single-use protective suits and is worth more than CZK 100 million. Meanwhile, another part of the delivery is being sent to the emergency services in Lviv.
