Nine trade unions representing various groups of workers in the public sector declared a strike emergency on Monday to support their attempts at securing wage increases in light of the double digit inflation rate that is currently affecting the country. Aside from civil servants and education workers, these include health and culture sector employees. Four further trade unions have voiced their support for the action, the spokesman of public sector unions Pavel Bednář told the Czech News Agency which reported the news on Monday.

The unions agreed to gradually declare their preparedness to strike last week, after unsuccessful negotiations with the government. Labour Minister Marian Jurečka has said that the government is prepared to raise public sector salaries this year and that negotiations are still ongoing. Last week, union leaders said that the government’s proposed salary increases where wholly insufficient.

According to the Czech Statistics Agency, public sector workers’ real wages have been impacted the hardest this year so far, falling by an average of 8.4 percent.

The Czech Republic has offered help to nearly 400,000 Ukrainians on its territory, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said at the Prague High-Level Dialogue on the Indo-Pacific conference on Monday. So far, 371,282 people fleeing the invaded country have received temporary visas, the Czech News Agency reports.

The conference is focused on the Indo-Pacific, which is a region that the Czech foreign minister says will be one of the priorities of the upcoming Czech presidency of the EU Council. Czechia hopes to intensify dialogues related to security, defence, cybersecurity and space security with partners from the region during its presidency, the minister said. The number of people in the Czech Republic who believe that their country is the target of an information war waged by Russia against the West fell from May’s 51 percent to 46 percent in June, according to a newly released survey conducted by the Ipsos agency in cooperation with the Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO). Most of those who do believe that the Czech Republic is a target of a Russian information war are men, young people and those with a university education.

Meanwhile, the number of people who do not have a clear opinion on the matter is growing, currently there are 27 percent as opposed to last month’s 18 percent.

What has also fallen is the positive attitude to blocking eight websites that were marked as disinformation news sites by the association CZ.NIC. In June, 34 percent of respondents said that blocking the websites was justified. Seven of the eight news sites have since been unblocked.

According to the results of the survey, the majority of Czechs believe that the most common cause of fake news and disinformation is the way in which people consume the news (40 percent). 37 percent of respondents said that an important role is also played by social media algorithms. Government policy is seen as responsible for fake news by 26 percent of the population, the results of the survey indicate.

The survey was conducted from May 31 to June 5 on a representative sample of the Czech population on the internet.

Czech household debt to banks fell in April by CZK 19 billion in month-on-month terms, according to the Czech Credit Bureau (CRIF). The reason is most likely the toughening of rules on providing mortgages which were put in place in April. Mortgage debt fell by CZK 15 billion for that month. Nevertheless, household debt didn’t just fall when it comes to mortgages, but also in other segments such as consumer loans (down by CZK 5 billion) or loans to companies (CZK 5 billion) and the self-employed (CZK 1 billion).

While household debt went down, savings grew among households in April, with the exception of the self-employed.

This is the first fall in month-on-month household debt in Czechia since January 2016.

The Czech Credit Bureau based its analysis on data from the Czech National Bank and the informaceofirmach.cz website.

The Czech National Football Team lost 0:2 to Spain at the La Rosadela stadium in Málaga on Sunday. Carlos Soler put the Spanish in the lead in the 24th minute. Pablo Sarabia then netted the second midway through the second half. Spain dominated the game in terms of possession.

After the game, Czech Republic’s coach Jaroslav Šilhavý, told Czech Television that his team had played a better match than in Prague the week before, when both teams drew 2:2. The team, according to Šilhavý, played braver, but could not make use of its chances. Spain’s manager Luis Enrique said that the Czechs showed over the past two games that they know how to defend and showed good physical strength.

The Czech Republic will next play Portugal and Switzerland in September. A good result against the Swiss side is key in maintaining the Czech position within the top segment of the Nations League tournament.

A newly published May poll of political parties in Czechia by the Kantar agency put the opposition ANO party in first place with 29.5 percent of the hypothetical vote for seats in the lower-house of Parliament, followed by the Spolu coalition made up of the Civic Democrats, the Christian Democrats and the TOP 09 party who would have a combined vote of 28.5 percent. When compared to the previous month, Spolu’s preferences among the public went down by 5 percent. Meanwhile, ANO increased its polling by 1 percent when compared to April.

The same increase was also registered by the Mayors and Independents coalition, which Kantar polled at 12.5 percent. The Freedom and Direct Democracy came in fourth with 11.5 percent of the vote, followed by the Social Democrats who would receive 5 percent of the vote, meaning that they would get back into the Chamber of Deputies if one discounts the possibility of a statistical error.

During its EU presidency, the Czech Republic will strive not to exclude Ukraine from attempts at finding a diplomatic solution to its conflict with Russia, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said on Sunday while speaking on Prima TV’s weekly politics debate show. The statement was made in reaction to attempts by some Western European politicians to find a diplomatic solution to the conflict, even if it means ceding territory to Russia.

Mr Lipavský said that the presidency itself will not influence negotiations with the Russian Federation, but that the Czech Republic will put questions related to supporting Ukraine on the table at EU meetings. "We will stress that Europe should not forget about Ukraine,” the minister said, highlighting that what happened to Czechoslovakia in 1938 must not happen to Ukraine.

The six month Czech EU presidency starts in July 2022.

A total of 840 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated value of over CZK 2 billion, was discovered by supermarket employees in the towns of Jičín and Rychnov nad Kněžnou on Friday, the Czech Police has announced. The shipment may have come from Colombia and is the largest amount of drugs that were seized in a single event in the history of the Czech Republic.

Police say that they found the cocaine in Kaufland supermarkets. The drugs were hidden in banana boxes. The head of the National Drug Headquarters of the Czech Republic, Jakub Frydrich, told Czech Radio that he hopes the drug shipment’s European distributors will be caught with the evidence that has been collected by police. Czech security forces are also looking into whether the 4.5 tons of cocaine from Colombia that were seized in the Italian port city of Trieste were related to the drugs seized in Czechia.
