Thousands of farmers protest in Prague against new subsidy policy

Some two thousand farmers gathered in Prague on Wednesday to protest against the Czech government’s new subsidy policy. After a meeting in the Lucerna palace in the morning, they marched to the seat of the government.

The event was called by the Chamber of Agriculture, the Farmers’ Union and trade union associations, who say the new system discriminates larger farmers. The demonstration has been criticised by the country’s Association of Private Farming, which is in favour of the changes.
