The opposition ANO party is currently leading in the polls with 28.5 percent of the hypothetical vote, followed by the ruling ODS party with 16.5 percent and the opposition Freedom and Direct Democracy party with 11.5 percent, according to a newly released survey conducted by the Median agency.

The Pirate Party, the Mayors and Independents polled at 9 and 8.5 percent respectively. Meanwhile, the TOP 09 party and the Christian Democrats both received around 4.5 percent, just below the minimum 5 percent threshold but within the statistical margin of error to suggest that they would also perhaps retain some seats in the Chamber of Deputies.

Meanwhile, the Social Democrats, a traditional centre-left party which is currently not represented in the lower-house, polled at 5.5 percent, meaning that they would get back into the Chamber of Deputies.

Compared with the previous March survey, ANO’s support grew by 1 percent while the Freedom and Direct Democracy party saw its support rise by 1.5 percent. The previous survey polled the ruling parties according to the coalitions with which they ran in the previous election. However, this time Median chose to poll each party individually.

Court hearings in the case of alleged EU subsidy fraud committed by former Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and his advisor at the time Jana Nagyová, commonly known as the Stork’s Nest affair, will begin on September 12 at Prague’s Municipal Court, news sites Novinky.cz and Seznam Zpravy reported on Tuesday. Judge Jan Šott did not accept a motion calling for a preliminary hearing.

Mr Babiš and Ms Nagyová stand accused of having committed subsidy fraud and damage to the financial interests of the European Union. They could face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison if found guilty. The prosecution has proposed a three-year-long probation for the former prime minister as well as a fine of CZK 10 million. When it comes to Ms Nagyová, the prosecution has called for the same sentence, except that the fine is CZK 500,000. Mr Babiš says he is innocent of the crime.

Stork’s Nest is the name of a resort and conference centre in Central Bohemia that was finished in 2010. The company that built the centre used EU funding for small and medium enterprises to finance the project. However, it was found that the company was originally under Agrofert, the industrial holding that Mr Babiš founded, until it was renamed and transferred to an unknown owner via anonymous shares.

The Supreme Audit Office has criticized the Czech authorities for poor municipal waste disposal in the Czech Republic, saying that even billions of euros in EU subsidies had not brought about an improvement. Landfilling remains the primary disposal method used, although it is the least appropriate. The country has also failed to increase its waste recycling capacity or to build or modernise waste-to-energy facilities. Moreover the amount of waste generated has not declined, the Supreme Audit Office said following an audit into the use of state and EU funds in the years 2018 - 2020.
