While official estimates based off registered residents place Prague’s population at around 1.3 million, a newly released analysis conducted by the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) suggests that this is around 300,000 people short of the real number. The institute’s director, Ondřej Boháč, says that there are around 1.6 million permanent residents in Prague, with a further 200,000 people commuting to the capital daily from the surrounding Central Bohemian Region.

The institute based its estimate off anonymous data gathered from mobile operators.

July saw year-on-year inflation reach 17.5 percent, rising for the 13th month in a row, the Czech Statistics Agency reported on Wednesday. However, in month-on-month terms, inflation grew by 1.3 percent in July, the lowest registered rise since February.

The sharpest rise was registered among energy and food prices. Gas, for example, saw a year-on-year price rise of 59.8 percent. Meanwhile, electricity prices rose by around a third.

Analysts questioned by the Czech News Agency highlighted that the July increase was lower when compared to the steep climb registered in previous months. However, they also noted that this may be down to the methodology used by the statisticians. Czech Banking Association analyst Jakub Seidler said that he expects inflation to attack the 20 percent mark in the coming months, with a noticeable decrease only occurring next year.

Over five million tourists stayed in accommodation facilities in Czechia during the second quarter of 2022, which represents a year-on-year increase by 229 percent, according to the latest figures released by the Czech Statistics Office.

However, that figure is still below pre-Covid levels, with nearly 5.8 million guests arriving in mass accommodation facilities during the same period in 2019.

The majority of last year’s guests, 3.1 million, were domestic tourists, with the exception of Prague, where three quarters of the guests were foreigners. The largest number of foreign tourists traditionally came from Germany, followed by Slovaks and Poles.
