Despite close to a quarter of Czech households being eligible to apply for the state housing benefit (příspěvek na bydlení), only 4 percent actually do, according to the results of a survey conducted by PAQ Research as part of a joint project with Czech Radio. The survey, conducted at the turn of October and November of this year, indicated that 24 percent of households in Czechia spend more than around a third of their net income on rent and associated costs.

According to sociologist Daniel Prokop, around 45 percent of those who would be eligible think that they are not. While among pensioners the reason is often a fear of too much bureaucracy, people in working age are often ashamed to ask for a benefit, Czech Radio writes.

The crown jewels of the Kingdom of Bohemia, one of Czechia’s most prized historical artefacts, are to be displayed to the public from January 17 to 21, 2023, the head of the Office of the President, Vratislav Mynář, announced on Monday. For the first time since 1955, the crown jewels will be displayed in the transept of Saint Vitus Cathedral. The skull of Saint Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech nation, will be displayed in the Saint Wenceslas Chapel within the cathedral.

The crown jewels are composed of the Saint Wenceslas Crown, which was originally made for Charles IV.’s coronation in the 14th century, the sceptre and the orb, which were added to the crown jewels later.

The Bohemian crown jewels are normally locked away from the public and tend to be exhibited only once every five years. The last time they were shown to the public was in January 2018, the year that marked the 100th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia.
