Czech conductor Jakub Hrůša has won the International Classical Music Award (ICMA) in the Symphonic Music category, the ICMA announced on its website on Wednesday. The award was given for the CD “Rott: Symphony No. 1 – Mahler: Blumine – Bruckner: Symphonic Prelude", which features compositions by Austrians Hans Rott, Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner performed by the Bamberg Symphony that was conducted by Mr Hrusa.

The ICMA writes that Hrusa’s and the Bamberg Symphony’s “interpretation is so convincing that we can say that no one else has advocated Rott’s music as profoundly as the performers on this recording.” Meanwhile, the featured works by Bruckner and Mahler “complete this suberb CD”, according to the ICMA.

The 41-year-old Czech conductor has led the Bamberg Symphony since 2016. He is set to take over as music director at the Royal Opera House from 2025.

The former advisor to President Miloš Zeman, Zdeněk Šarapatka, has issued a property seizure proposal against the current head of state, Mr Šarapatka announced via Twitter on Tuesday. The proposal comes after the president failed to apologise to Mr Šarapatka, despite being ordered to do so by court.

Miloš Zeman said in November 2017 that Mr Šarapatka was fired from his position at the Office of the Government for incompetence. However, the former adviser said he left his job after a mutual agreement by both parties and a subsequent trial ruled in his favour.

President Zeman’s lawyer, Marek Nespala, said on Monday that he has asked the Czech Supreme Court to postpone the execution of the court ruling.

A team of scientists from the Faculty of Information Technology at the Czech Technical University in Prague has won the international Weather4cast NeurIPS Competition in New Orleans, Czech Television reported on Tuesday. The aim of the competition was to predict precipitation as accurately as possible based off satellite data that was collected over a period of two years in seven selected regions.

The Czech science team was made up of Jiří Pihrt, Rudolf Raevskiy, Petr Šimánek and Matej Choma, who together with the company Meteopress developed a project that makes it possible to predict weather conditions with high accuracy several tens of minutes ahead of time. The system is especially useful because it does not rely on meteorological radar stations and can therefore also be used in developing countries.

The Carmelite Order has announced its decision to close the doors of the Prague Church of Our Lady Victorious to presidential candidate Andrej Babiš because they do not want to be associated with his aggressive election campaign. Mr. Babiš announced his intention to visit the church, which is home to the Infant Jesus of Prague, on Tuesday in what is viewed as an attempt to win over believers.  The Carmelite Order promptly issued a statement saying that they do not want the world-famous pilgrimage site and the Infant Jesus of Prague to be misused for political ends. "Given the timing and media presentation of the visit, we consider it to be part Mr. Babiš’ election campaign which is being conducted in a very aggressive and fear-inducing manner which the Carmelite Order cannot identify with," the statement said.
