Photos of Stropnický’s meeting with the delegation led by Freedom and Direct Democracy deputy Jan Hrnčíř were shared earlier by the deputy chairman of the lower house Jan Bartošek, who said the only option was Stropnický's immediate resignation.

The ambassador told Deník N that he had not checked the history and activities of his visitor and that could not have a full knowledge of the disinformation scene in the Czech Republic.

The Constitutional Court has ruled in favour of a German man who was shot in the knee by Czechoslovak border guards in July 1989 while trying to cross the Iron Curtain in the Communist era. Thomas Bartsche received only CZK 5,500 from the Czech courts in compensation for lasting injuries stemming from the shooting. The courts have been ordered to look into awarding him appropriate compensation.

The Constitutional Court ruled on Thursday that he had suffered the injuries in extraordinary circumstances that justified higher compensation. In addition he could not have known that communism would fall soon after, a judge said.

The rivals for the Czech presidency, ex-Czech Army chief Petr Pavel and ANO leader Andrej Babiš, faced off on Thursday in the second in a series of debates before a second round runoff at the end of next week. In a discussion hosted by news outlet Blesk the two candidates discussed such issues as the war in Ukraine and campaign assertions.

Mr. Babiš defended billboards in which he seemed to imply Mr. Pavel could lead Czechs into war, while Mr. Pavel responded that the ex-PM should apologise to soldiers over the matter.

The ANO chief denied that he was copying the smear tactics of incumbent Miloš Zeman, who five years ago tried to portray opponent Jiří Drahoš as welcoming refugees.

Mr. Pavel asked how his opponent planned to hold consultations with cabinet members after indiscriminately slamming the government during his campaign.
