Thousands of people gathered in Prague's Wenceslas Square on Saturday afternoon for an anti-government demonstration under the slogan "Czechia Against Poverty" called by the Pravo Respekt Odbornost (PRO) party. The demonstration started at 2 p.m. after Bedřich Smetana's Má Vlast was played from loudspeakers in the square.

The demonstrators' list of demands includes the resignation of the cabinet, stopping social media operators from restricting freedom of speech, passing a law that requires the media to provide objective and balanced information, and a peaceful solution to the war in Ukraine, including the end of supplying military equipment to the country and the possible organization of a peace conference in the Czech Republic. They also want the government to acquire 100% control of energy giant ČEZ, in which it now holds approximately 70% of shares, and to abandon the system of trading emission allowances.

Lawyer Jindřich Rajchl founded the PRO party last year. He has previously stated that the Czech Republic is getting poorer mainly due to the self-destructive energy policy of the European Union, which he says is unquestioningly promoted by the Czech government.

Around 6,000 households in Czechia, more than a third of which were in the Pardubice region, were without power on Saturday morning due to strong winds. A further 1,100 were in Vysočina and around a thousand in South Moravia, the Czech News Agency reports.

Energy company ČEZ recorded over 8,000 supply points without power around 3 a.m. on Saturday. By the morning, that number had decreased to around 2,500, but at around 11 a.m. it increased once again to around 3,000. Rival company EG.D also registered roughly 3,000 customers without power in its supply network.

The strong winds, accompanied by snowfall in some areas, are also causing disruption to transport. Firefighters have been called out to dozens of sites of fallen branches or trees blocking railways and roads. The road from Tanvald to Harrachov has been closed to trucks since midnight. The meteorological office's warning for strong winds remains in effect until Saturday evening.

Activists marched along a stretch of the highway leading through Prague on Friday morning calling for a 30 km/h speed limit in the metropolis. The protest, the second this week, in which activists walked from Vyšehrad to Muzeum, was organised by the Last Generation initiative. Its members point to the fact that a 30 km/h speed limit has already been introduced in Paris and Brussels, and argue that it would increase safety, reduce emissions and improve people's health.

President Pavel will make public his stand on the controversial government proposal to reduce the June indexation of pensions, which is guaranteed by law, after a meeting with representatives of the opposition ANO party due to take place next Wednesday. Pavel confirmed this in an interview for Czech Television shortly after taking office on Thursday. His stand is decisive because if he uses his right of veto the lower house would not have the time needed to overturn it and it would not go into effect. Asked whether he had already made up his mind, Pavel replied that there were so many legitimate reservations to the bill that it was proving to be a hard decision. The opposition ANO party has indicated that if the president signs the bill into law, they will challenge it in the Constitutional Court.

President Petr Pavel has appointed Petr Hladík minister of the environment. Prime Minister Petr Fiala  proposed Hladík's appointment at the end of last year, but the former president, Miloš Zeman, refused to make the appointment. Deputy Prime Minister and Labour Minister Marian Jurečka has been in charge of the portfolio since the beginning of November. In the meantime Hladík has served as deputy environment minister.

Hladík’s nomination was questioned after his office was raided by the police and his computer seized in connection with a corruption case in Brno, where he then served as deputy mayor. No charges were filed against him.
