    Meteorologists have called a high wind warning for the western parts of the country on Tuesday. The wind is expected to gain in strength late Tuesday afternoon and last until midnight, with a force of around 70 kilometers per hour and more in the mountain regions. There is a heightened danger of falling trees and electricity lines.

    Over a hundred firefighters have been battling to contain a blaze in a wood processing plant in Čelákovice, near Prague. According to the ctk news agency a mobile chemical laboratory measured increased values of carbon monoxide in the area but experts say the levels are not harmful to health. One volunteer fireman is reported to have suffered light injuries. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

    The fleet of planes securing air transport for the head of state and government should be expanded by two jets in the near future, the daily Lidove noviny reported on Monday. The paper said the Czech Defence Ministry is now working on the specifications of the aircraft needed and discussing possibilities with US officials. The need to boost the fleet stems from the gradual phasing out of older aircraft.

    Czech Transport Minister Martin Kupka is pushing for the European Commission to modify and postpone some of the strict Euro 7 emission standards on reducing air pollution from new motor vehicles sold in the EU to meet Europe’s Green Deal. The Czech transport minister is meeting in Strasbourg with representatives of other EU member states who are critical of the strict rules for fear that they will severely undermine Europe’s car industry. Minister Kupka is due to debate the matter with his counterparts from Germany, Italy, Poland, France, Spain and Portugal.

    President Petr Pavel held talks with his Slovak counterpart President Zuzana Čaputová in Bratislava on Monday. The two heads of state discussed the possibility of making joint foreign trips to further their countries’ interests and closer cooperation in fighting disinformation.

    On his first foreign trip abroad the newly-inagurated Czech president also met with the Slovak prime minister, Eduard Heger and laid flowers at a memorial plaque to the murdered Slovak journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiance.

    Czechia and Slovakia, who spent over 70 years in a common state, enjoy above-standard relations.

    President Petr Pavel set off on his first foreign diplomatic visit as head of state on Monday - a two-day visit to Slovakia, which is traditionally the first destination for newly-inaugurated Czech presidents. He will be received by his Slovak counterpart Zuzana Čaputová at 11.30 a.m. The Czech flag was flying over her headquarters at Grasalkovičův palác as of Monday morning.

    Czechia will not make it to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic in Tokyo after losing 3-8 to Australia on Monday, their fourth game of the group stage. Although Czechia got off to a winning start by beating China 8-5 on Friday, they lost their subsequent matches to Japan, South Korea, and now Australia. Before Monday's game there was still a possibility of Czechia advancing to the quarterfinals by way of a three-way tie with Korea and Australia.

    Petr Pavel will visit Ukraine in April, the Czech News Agency reports. The recently inaugurated Czech president agreed on this during a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday, which according to Mr Pavel's spokeswoman was requested by president Zelensky so he could congratulate Mr Pavel on taking office.

    The heads of state also discussed Czech support for Ukraine in the coming months and Ukraine's integration into the European Union.

    Monday is expected to be overcast with strong winds reaching speeds of around 65 kilometres per hour predicted for certain parts of the country, namely the Moravian-Silesian Region, the northern part of the Olomouc Region and the area around the town of Frýdlant in the Liberec Region. Daytime temperatures should range between 6 and 13 degrees Celsius.
