The rector of Charles University, Milena Králíčková, has expressed concern over the dismissal of priest and historian Tomáš Petráček from the Catholic Faculty of Theology and the manner in which students were informed about the matter. She called on the dean of the faculty, Vojtěch Novotný, to calm the situation and to find an amicable solution.  On the other hand, Prague Archbishop Jan Graubner has expressed support for the dean’s decision.

Tomáš Petráček, who is an advocate of equal marriage, says that he has been dismissed due to pressure from within the Church and personal antipathy towards him, as in the past, he had supported the current dean's rival for the post.

Experts estimate that about one in five cases of serious domestic violence and one in 20 rapes are reported.

Plans to ban trucks and other heavy vehicles overtaking passenger cars along certain sections of the D1 highway have had to be postponed, Czech Television reported, citing the Directorate of Roads and Motorways. The directorate said it would not be able to install the necessary road signs by the end of the summer. The ban is thus likely to be enforced in the winter season. Although the D1 highway is the country’s main route from Prague to Brno, it only has two lanes and traffic police say that an overtaking ban for heavy vehicles would significantly help the flow of traffic and increase safety along certain stretches of the road.

The ruling parties have reached agreement on a number of changes to the government’s austerity  package aimed at lowering the state budget deficit, Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced after Wednesday's talks with unions and employers. One of the concessions made is that the government will maintain the tax advantage on employee benefits with a limit of half of the average wage in the previous period. Another planned change, compared to the original proposal, is that the VAT rate for magazines and newspapers will be unified at 12 percent, instead of the previously proposed 21 percent rate for newspapers. The excise tax on alcohol will be gradually increased by 10 percent a year in next two years and 5 percent in the following year. The coalition will now present the austerity package to the Budget Committee in the lower house.

Confidence in the Czech economy increased again in August for the second month in a row, up two points from July's 91.4 to 93.4, according to the latest data published by the Czech Statistics Office on Thursday. However, in a year-on-year comparison, overall confidence is lower, as last August it was at 94.3.

Confidence among entrepreneurs increased from July by 2.8 points to 93.9. Entrepreneurs working in industry, services and construction were more optimistic than those working in trade, which was the only sector from those surveyed to see a decrease in confidence.

Consumer confidence fell by 1.7 points to 91, with increases in the number of people who believe that the current time is not suitable for making large purchases, in those who expect the overall economic situation in Czechia to worsen in the next 12 months, and in households who fear a worsening of their own financial situation. Although consumer confidence is significantly higher than it was this time last year - last August, it was at 77.9 - it is still far below its long-term average.
