    Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský has called on more countries to support the Czech shells-for-Ukraine initiative, so as to enable Prague to acquire as much ammunition for the country as possible. Mr. Lipavsky made the appeal at the NATO summit in Brussels where member states discussed further aid for the country. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba who was present at the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting stressed how badly Ukraine needed more military supplies to defend itself against Russian aggression. The overall cost of the Czech shells-for-Ukraine initiative, is estimated at 1.6 to 2 billion euros for 800,000 shells sourced from outside the EU.

    A several-week-old baby in Hradec Králové died from whooping cough on Wednesday, the third fatality from the disease in Czechia this year. The baby suffered from other infections as well and was transferred to Hradec Králové from another hospital in a critical condition.

    Health officials have recorded over 700 new cases of whooping cough this week, which brings the total number of registered cases to more than 6,000.

    Since the beginning of this year, doctors have administered more than 81,000 vaccines against the respiratory disease, 39,000 more than last year. According to Health Minister Vlastimil Válek, more than 100,000 vaccines will arrive in the country by the end of April.

    Czechia will release an additional CZK 10 million to the World Food Programme for humanitarian aid to Gaza, Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said on Friday. In January of this year the government allocated CZK 5 million for Palestinian civilians to the same program.

    "We cannot stand idly by and watch the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, where there is a real threat of famine,” Lipavský wrote on the social network X. The allocation of CZK 5 million for Palestinian civilians through the WFP was announced by President Petr Pavel during his visit to Israel in early January.

    Three-time Olympic champion Ester Ledecká received the European Union Trophy for the best athlete from an EU country from the Spanish Royal couple on Thursday.

    The Czech skier and snowboarder is the first recipient of the award, which was introduced on the occasion of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union last year.

    The prize was handed out along with Spain’s National Sports Awards at a ceremony at the presidential palace El Pardo in Madrid.

    Prime Minister Petr Fiala wants to discuss security and economic cooperation during his visit to the United States in mid-April. In an interview for Blesk.cz on Thursday, the Czech prime minister said the visit reflects the excellent relations between the two countries and highlighted the fact that it is taking place on the 25th anniversary of Czechia’s accession to NATO.

    Mr. Fiala is scheduled to hold talks with Mr. Biden at the White House on April 15. According to a statement from White House spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, the two politicians will reaffirm their continued support for Ukraine and discuss a wide range of topics, including security issues, economic opportunities and democratic values.

    Czech-born German politician Petr Bystroň from the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has denied claims that he accepted money from a Russian influence network, the DPA agency reported on Thursday. He made the statement in a letter addressed to the party leadership. The information about Mr Bystroň getting cash from the Russians came from the Czech counterintelligence service, which said last week that it had broken up a Russian group seeking to influence European elections and spread anti-Ukraine propaganda.

    Mr. Bystroň previously told the Czech News Agency that AfD’s leadership wants to personally explain the whole affair after the Easter break, which ends this week.

    An analysis of the tragic mix-up of two female patients at Prague’s Bulovka Hospital revealed misconduct by two employees. One remains off duty, while the other will remain at the hospital and work under supervision, the head of the hospital, Jan Kvaček, said on Thursday.

    The incident, which happened last week, led doctors to perform an abortion on the wrong woman, who was four months pregnant and was supposed to undergo a routine check-up. An anonymous source told the media that both women were of Asian descent.

    Mr. Kvaček apologized to the woman on behalf of the hospital and is negotiating with her about compensation.

    The new EU leadership will have to deal with security and defence, as well as with its own competitiveness and enlargement, European Commission Vice-President Věra Jourová said at a conference at the Liechtenstein Palace in Prague on Thursday.

    The Czech EU Commissioner for Values and Transparency, who will not seek another mandate, called for continued military and humanitarian aid to Ukraine as well as support for its refugees and said it was essential to maintain close cooperation with NATO.

    Mrs. Jourová also said Europe would benefit from more innovations and fewer regulations. The challenge is to reduce dependence on energy sources from Russia, but also on other less reliable partners, she said.

    The Prague Student Summit, an educational project organised by the Association for International Affairs, will culminate on Thursday with a conference dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Czechia’s accession to the European Union as well as its 25-year-long presence in NATO.

    Among the speakers at the conference, which takes place at the Prague Crossroads centre, will be U.S. Ambassador to Prague Bijan Sabet and Minister for European Affairs Martin Dvořák. The event will be attended by more than 360 secondary school and university students.

    The Prague Student Summit focuses predominantly on security and climate. This year's edition is held under the patronage of President Petr Pavel.
