Aggression among pupils, verbal abuse of teachers and truancy have increased at Czech primary schools, while truancy remains a long-term issue at secondary schools, according to the findings of the Czech School Inspectorate. Secondary schools have also seen a rise in cyberbullying, verbal aggression and problematic use of digital technologies. In its annual report for the 2023/2024 school year, the inspectorate also described as alarming the fact that cases of self-harm were recorded at nearly half of the inspected primary schools, calling for greater attention to students’ mental health.

Most people in the Czech Republic expect their personal financial situation to improve or remain stable next year, with the greatest optimism among those under 26, according to the results of an Ipsos survey for Home Credit. Fifty-seven percent of respondents said they expect their income to stay roughly the same, while 34 percent anticipate growth, most often by 1,000 to 3,000 crowns a month. Income gains are mainly expected from wage increases, though a fifth foresee additional income from side jobs or rentals, and 10 percent from investments.
At the same time, more than half of respondents said they expect their expenses to rise, especially people aged 27 to 35.

The Czech Republic will record the lowest number of births in its history in 2025, according to preliminary data from health authorities. According to Antonín Pařízek of the Czech Gynecological and Obstetrical Society, the number of births could fall to around 75,000 this year, with some regions reporting nearly 20 percent fewer newborns.
Experts expect low birth rates to persist. ÚZIS director Ladislav Dušek told the Czech News Agency he expects low birth numbers will continue for at least eight to ten years, making the current network of maternity hospitals unsustainable. The country has 84 maternity hospitals; the future of at least six will be discussed by insurers next year.

The new Czech government plans to audit the contract for the purchase and operation of 24 F-35 supersonic fighter jets, worth around 150 billion crowns, as well as payments already made, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (ANO) told Czech Television. “We are studying the contract, the conditions, the advance payments, how they were paid, whether there was overpayment, and so on,” Schillerová said.
Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna (nominated by the SPD) said earlier that his ministry would carry out an analysis, including the option of terminating the contract. However the ANO party has made it clear that it is not in favour of terminating the agreement. Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlíček (ANO) previously said the purchase of the F-35 jets was a settled matter.

In an interview with the Czech News Agency (ČTK) Hašek said that as a well-known personality he feels a strong sense of responsibility to speak up in support of Ukraine, as his statements reach audiences not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad. He has visited the invaded country on several occasions.

The state budget deficit for this year had reached nearly CZK 275 billion as of 19 December. According to the Finance Ministry, the deficit deepened by CZK 49.3 billion in November to CZK 232.4 billion. It was the lowest deficit for November in the past six years, but still the sixth-highest since the establishment of the Czech Republic in 1993.

Traditional post-Christmas sales are officially starting on Saturday in brick-and-mortar shops across Czechia and will run until mid-January. Online stores launched their discounts earlier, some already on Christmas Eve. Retailers say the range of offers and average discounts will be similar to last season, with electronics and clothing among the most sought-after items. Shops expect higher customer numbers than on regular days and have reinforced staff shifts, partly due to customers returning unsuitable Christmas gifts. Some retailers have extended return deadlines. Consumer inspectors are urging shoppers to remain cautious during sales and to check that discounts are calculated in line with the law, especially the requirement to show the lowest price from the previous 30 days.
