Around 30,000 laying hens are to be destroyed, after part of the original stock of 32,000 birds had already died. The farm is close to another facility where nearly 35,000 hens were culled last week. Both operations belong to Xaverov, part of the Agrotrade group. Firefighters, veterinarians and inmates from prisons in Pardubice and Hradec Králové are involved. The birds are being euthanised using carbon dioxide and transported to a rendering plant.

The regulated part of electricity prices for households will fall by 15.1 percent from the start of next year, saving consumers an average of 420 crowns per megawatt hour compared with this year. Larger customers are also set to save hundreds of crowns per MWh. The decision was announced by the Energy Regulatory Office, which has already factored in relief from fees for subsidised renewable energy sources approved by the government in December. The cabinet of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, the ANO party leader, decided that the state will fully cover these costs next year, adding about 17 billion crowns to the 2026 budget. Czech police have proposed charging former MP Dominik Feri (TOP-09 Party) over an additional rape case, prosecutors said. The case concerns a girl who was 17 at the time and who testified that although the sexual encounter was consensual, Feri removed a condom without her consent. The investigation was reopened after the Constitutional Court ruled that such conduct can amount to rape. Feri is already serving a three-year prison sentence for the rape of two other women and an attempted rape, which he denies. Elected in 2017 at the age of 21 as parliament’s youngest-ever member, he rose to national prominence and on social media as a rare young political celebrity before resigning his seat because of rape charges.

The world is moving closer to a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine, a process supported by the Czech government, Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists) said in an interview for Czech Press Agency. He argued that Ukraine has made significant concessions in recent days and that responsibility now lies with Russia. According to Radek Vondráček, head of the Czech parliament’s foreign affairs committee and an ANO party MP, there is a realistic hope for lasting peace. Macinka said US President Donald Trump is the key figure pushing both sides toward negotiations, while strong Western security guarantees could serve as an alternative to Ukraine’s NATO membership.

Czech employers expect the economy to grow by between two and three percent in 2026, with inflation remaining below 2.5 percent. The Chamber of Commerce of the Czech Republic forecasts GDP growth of 2.3 percent, driven not only by household consumption but increasingly by business investment. The Confederation of Industry also expects moderate growth, warning of weaker foreign demand, especially from the EU. Business groups cite high energy costs, excessive regulation and a lack of skilled workers as the main obstacles. Small and medium-sized firms are slightly more optimistic, predicting growth of up to three percent.
