    The traditional Christmas tree was erected on Prague’s Old Town Square on Monday night. The spruce – which was felled in the village of Kytlice in North Bohemia – is 58 years old and measures 28 metres.

    The tree, one of the most visible symbols of Christmas in the Czech capital, will be decorated in the coming days.

    The lighting ceremony will take place on Saturday evening, on the first weekend of Advent, marking the opening of the traditional Christmas markets held on the square.

    Prime Minister Petr Fiala will attend a meeting of prime ministers of the Visegrad Four countries, comprising Czechia, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary, in Košice on Thursday.

    The talks will focus on energy security, the war in Ukraine and current challenges, including migration, the Office of the Government said in a press release today.

    The Košice conference will be the first meeting at the level of prime ministers under the Slovak V4 presidency, which lasts from the beginning of July until the end of June next year. After that, Czechia is due to take over the leadership of the group for the next twelve months.

    Christian Democratic Party leader Marian Jurečka has said he will ask the prime minister to set in motion the process of appointing Petr Hladík Minister of the Environment. Mr. Hladík was to have been appointed to the post in late October, to replace Anna Hubáčková, who gave up the portfolio for health reasons, but his appointment was thwarted by the fact that he was involved a in corruption investigation centred on the allocation of municipal housing in Brno. Minister Jurečka argued that Mr. Hladík had not been charged in the case and there was no reason to delay his appointment any longer.

    Czechs rely on the European Union for security and protection against Russia, according to a poll conducted by the STEM agency. An overwhelming majority of Czechs believe that the EU countries should work together to protect their borders and territory, deal with migration, train their armed forces or make joint gas purchases.

    However respondents were divided on the issue of setting energy price ceilings and taxing windfall profits for electricity producers and suppliers. Half of them favour a common approach in the EU, while the other half believes that national governments should decide these matters independently.

    Czechia, Romania and Hungary face the risk of exchange-rate crises over the next one year as fiscal and external challenges mount, according to Nomura Holdings Inc. The warning is based on analysis of eight indicators including FX reserves import cover, real short-term interest rates, as well as fiscal and current account measures, according to Nomura’s Damocles Index which assessed 32 emerging markets’ vulnerability to a currency crisis. Hungary’s forint is among the worst-performing emerging market currencies this year after a hold up in recovery funding from the European Union. The currencies of Romania and Czechia have also declined more than 8% against the dollar, the report says.

    Czechia will send two more heavy bridge rigs to Ukraine within further humanitarian aid to the war-torn country. According to Jana Urbancová, spokeswoman for the firefighters unit that is administering the aid, they will be transported to Ukraine in the coming week mainly during the night hours. The transport will require seven tractor-trailers, five trucks and two escort vehicles. Intensified bombing has done severe damage to Ukraine’s infrastructure.

    Interest among Czechs in subsidies for photovoltaics and heat pumps has reached a record high this year, Czech Television reported. The authorities have already received more than 56,000 applications this year, almost four times more than last year. Companies across the country are seeing increased demand and clients are having to wait several months longer than usual for deliveries.

    The outgoing director of the Lány Forest Administration, Miloš Balák, has appealed a court verdict which found him guilty of mismanagement. According to the verdict, Balák knowingly signed an unfavourable contract under which he sold stone mined in the Lany area at a price significantly cheaper than its market price. The court fined him 870,000 crowns and imposed a two-year ban on his activities in organisations managing state property. Balák, who is retiring as director of the Lany Forest Administration at the end of the year, claims he is innocent of any wrongdoing.

    People in Czechia can get tested for HIV and hepatitis B and C for free from Monday to Sunday within a Europe-wide prevention and awareness campaign. Eighty-two testing sites will be open to the public, both in brick-and-mortar clinics and mobile units. The list of sites is available on the website of the State Institute of Health, which is coordinating the campaign in Czechia. For foreigners, basic information on HIV and sexually transmitted diseases is available in ten languages. According to the State Health Institute, Czechia is one of the countries with relatively low levels of HIV and AIDS. A total of 4,074 HIV-positive cases have been detected in the country since monitoring started in 1985. Over five hundred people have died of AIDS to date.
