The interior ministers of the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovakia and Hungary are discussing the issue of migration in Prague on Thursday, one day ahead of the extraordinary meeting of EU interior ministers in Brussels called by Czech interior minister Vít Rakušan. Mr. Rakušan told the Czech News Agency that the main topic on Thursday's agenda will be the current situation on the Western Balkan migration route and its impact on Central Europe. Friday's extraordinary meeting was called to deal with the disputes surrounding the introduction of border controls inside the Schengen area and the reception of migrants picked up in the Mediterranean.

The increase in the number of migrants arriving in the EU in recent months has put a strain on relations between some EU member states. Some countries, including the Czech Republic, reacted to the situation by introducing border controls, which created tensions in Czech-Slovak relations.

Friday's second agenda item refers to the recent dispute between Italy and France over a humanitarian ship carrying migrants rescued from the Mediterranean, to which Italy refused entry. After waiting at sea for two weeks to be assigned a port, the ship finally docked in France. After this incident, France strengthened border controls with Italy.

Czech fighter pilot Aleš Svoboda is one of the European Space Agency's new team of astronauts, joining them as a member of the reserve team. Mr. Svoboda and the rest of the astronauts were selected from almost 22,600 people, approximately 200 of whom were Czech. He was the only one of his countrymen to be chosen. The ESA announced the results of its selection on Wednesday afternoon in Paris.

In the late 1970s, the former Czechoslovakia became only the third country in the world to have one of its citizens go to space. Military pilot Vladimír Remek was a crew member of the Soyuz 28 spacecraft in March 1978, the first astronaut from a country other than the Soviet Union or the United States. Remek was the first and only Czechoslovak astronaut to see space to date.

The government has approved a draft law on the protection of whistleblowers, despite critics of the proposal who say that it does not go far enough. The Pirates party, for example, criticised the fact that the law in its current formulation does not apply to anonymous tipoffs and that it does not apply to the reporting of all crimes.

Previous efforts to pass such a law in the Czech Republic have repeatedly failed, with previous proposals consistently rejected. According to Minister of Justice Pavel Blažek, this draft is one that stands a chance of passing through the lower house and the Senate, but he did not rule out possible future amendments.

The head of the Pirates party Ivan Bartoš said that the current proposal is worse than the draft prepared by the previous government, and that his party did not vote in favour of it at Wednesday's Cabinet meeting.

Anti-corruption organizations have also criticised the law, saying the proposed rules are complicated and unclear and that there is a risk that whistleblowers will continue to be insufficiently protected from retaliation by employers.

Eight historical buildings, mainly châteaus, castles and monasteries, have been added to Czechia's list of national cultural monuments. The government approved their status on Wednesday. Among the new national cultural monuments is the Augustinian monastery in Brno where Gregor Mendel discovered the laws of inheritance by cross-breeding pea plants. Two other Augustinian monasteries and five castles and châteaus around the country were also awarded the status.

Currently there are over 300 national cultural monuments registered in the country, including famous sights such as Charles Bridge, Villa Tugendhat in Brno and the archaeological site of Dolní Věstonice. National cultural monuments receive more protection than cultural monuments, of which there are many more. Proposals for national cultural monuments must be discussed by the government, unlike cultural monuments, which are approved by the Ministry of Culture alone.

The Czech police recorded 15,409 cybercrimes this year in the period from January to the end of October, a significant increase from previous years. As a point of comparison, there were only 9,518 in the whole of 2021 and 2,195 a decade ago. According to data from the Czech Banking Association, an average of CZK 161,500 is incurred per cyberattack victim.

Deputy Police Chief Tomáš Kubík told journalists on Wednesday that the sophistication of these attacks is also growing considerably. The Czech police have warned people to be especially on their guard in the run-up to Christmas, as the activity of cybercriminals is likely to intensify during this period.

Countries with coastlines have an obligation under international law to allow humanitarian ships carrying rescued migrants into their ports without delay, Czech Minister for European Affairs Mikuláš Bek told the European Parliament on Wednesday during a debate on migration.

According to the Czech News Agency, Mr. Bek was indirectly alluding to the recent dispute between Italy and France regarding the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking, to which Italy refused to grant a port. The ship had to wait two weeks at sea for a port to be assigned before eventually docking in France. The vessel was carrying migrants rescued in the Mediterranean Sea.

In his speech to the EP, Mr. Bek said that rescuing people from drowning is a humanitarian imperative and duty, that all states must respect international and EU rules and assign the nearest port where migrants can safely disembark, that there should be more cooperation with migrants' origin countries and that more action should be taken against people smugglers.

Due to the growing number of migrants entering the EU, the asylum and immigration systems of several EU member states have been under pressure recently. The EU border agency Frontex registered 70 percent more illegal entries to the EU from January to the end of September than in the same period last year.

A new poll released by the CVVM agency suggests that trust in the country’s president, Miloš Zeman, has slightly improved since the summer, reaching 33 percent. However, the number of people who distrust the Czech head of state is even higher, currently standing at 65 percent.

The lower house has received a 29.8 percent backing, which is also a slight improvement, while trust in the cabinet has remained at 28 percent. Local government officials - mayors and municipal councils – traditionally enjoy the highest backing of over 60 percent. The overall satisfaction with the political situation remains low.
