Russia's aggression and growing assertiveness threaten to undermine the international order built on agreed rules and cooperation, President Petr Pavel told Czech ambassadors in a speech at Prague Castle on Tuesday.

The head of state told the gathering of diplomats that he was proud of the strength and unity with which Czechia had stood up for Ukraine and provided shelter for refugees; at the same time, it has managed to break free from its dependence on Russian energy, as impossible as that may have once appeared.

Mr. Pavel said a Russian victory could not be allowed, adding that Moscow had never accepted its loss of political influence over Czechia.

The Czech economy contracted by 0.4 percent year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023, according to a revised estimate from the Czech Statistics Office published on Tuesday. However, the economy grew slightly compared to the first quarter of the year.

In addition, the economy did better in the second quarter than economists at the Czech National Bank had expected.

The year-on-year contraction has been attributed to Czech households, which attempted to save money and reduced consumption in the period in question.

The news outlet Seznam Zprávy reported that the raids were in connection with the former head of IKEM, Michal Stiborek. He resigned recently, following accusations he had made tens of millions of crowns through loans at extortionate rates.

Internal affairs are investigating suspected coercion and extortion at IKEM, while the organised crime police are looking into possible manipulation of contracts and corruption, Czech Television reported.
