• Minimum wage in Czechia should rise to CZK 20,900 in 2025

    The minimum wage in Czechia will rise by CZK 1, 900 to CZK 20, 900 next year, Czech Labour and Social Affairs Minister Marian Jurečka said on a debate program on Czech Television on Sunday. He said the increase in the minimum wage will benefit roughly half a million people. According to Jurečka, the minimum wage could rise to betwenn CZK 28,000 and CZK 29,000 by 2029. Josef Středula, chairman of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions, has welcomed the move.

  • Prague public transport to use hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles

    Prague public transport and Prague Services (PSAS) will introduce hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles in the near future within a project to decarbonize Prague through hydrogen mobility. The pilot project for the production and use of green hydrogen is financed from European funds. Prague City Hall applied for a European subsidy of about CZK 1.56 million in March of this year. The pilot project will run until 31 December 2025.

  • More bikers and cyclists involved in road accidents

    Altogether 89 people died in traffic accidents in the Czech Republic during the summer holidays, according to preliminary police data. The road toll during July and August this year was slightly higher than last year and the year before, but the number is the third lowest in the last ten years, according to accident statistics. However the police is concerned about a significant increase in the number of cyclists and bikers involved in fatal road accidents.

  • Defence Ministry not happy with Sweden’s terms for extended Gripen lease

    The Czech Ministry of Defence is not satisfied with Sweden's terms for extending the lease of 14 JAS-39 Gripen aircraft beyond 2027 and has asked the Swedish side to amend the proposal, Minister Jana Černochová said  after a meeting with Swedish Defence Minister Palo Jonson in Prague. Negotiations will continue in the coming weeks. The minister said that since the price of military equipment is rising on global scale, it is clear that the lease price must also go up, however she said there are items in the offer that the Czech side does not think the country should have to pay for. According to Černochová, the Gripens are at the end of their life cycle and should be modernised.

  • Harley Davidson bikers roar through Prague within 12th All American Fest

    Over 800 motorbike riders took part in a ride through Prague on Saturday within the All American Fest, held for the 12th time this weekend. The motorcade, mostly with Harley Davidson machines, set off from the Prague Exhibition Grounds towards the Nusel Bridge and back around the waterfront, attracting hundreds of onlookers. President Petr Pavel, himself a motorbike enthusiast, also made an appearance at the event on Saturday afternoon.

  • Ban on non-environmentally friendly boilers now in force

    A ban on boilers that do not meet the parameters of the third and higher emission class comes into force in Czechia as of September 1st. Despite this there are still over 150,000 old boilers in Czech households, the ctk news agency reported. According to manufacturers, the demand for replacements has increased dramatically in recent weeks, but the vast majority of orders could not be processed before the ban came into force. Fines for heating with a non-environmentally friendly boiler can reach up to CZK 50,000, and can be issued repeatedly.

  • Number of civil servants to increase next year

    The number of civil servants will increase by about 1,200 to 488,788 next year, according to information from the 2025 draft budget. Spending on salaries in the public sector will rise by CZK 11.2 billion to CZK 277.8 billion. The average salary of civil servants in 2025 should be CZK 45,301. This represents an increase of 3.7 percent year-on-year . The education sector has the highest number of state employees, followed by the Interior Ministry.

  • Finance Ministry unveils draft budget for 2025

    The Finance Ministry has unveiled its state budget proposal for 2025 with a projected CZK 230 billion deficit. Budget revenues will rise by 7.5 percent to CZK 2.086 trillion, while expenditures will rise by 5.7 percent to CZK 2.316 trillion. The state budget proposal reflects efforts to gradually reduce the gap in spending. The projected deficit for this year is CZK 252 billion and last year it was CZK 288.5 billion. However several ministries are not happy with the proposal and are pushing for an increase in funds to cover their needs.

  • Muchova moves into US Open fourth round after beating Potapova

    Karolina Muchova advanced to the last 16 of the US Open by winning against Russian Anastasia Potapova 6-4, 6-2 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Saturday. Muchova, ranked No 52, will next face the winner of the match between Kazakh Yulia Putintseva and Italian Jasmine Paolini.
