The European Commission has begun examining in detail whether the Czech Post is not receiving too much state compensation for providing a mandatory postal service.
The EU executive arm is examining whether the amount of up to CZK 7.5 billion provisionally earmarked for the period 2018 to 2022 does not violate EU state aid rules.
The Czech government approached the commission with a request for approval of the state support in January. Brussels is now responding to a complaint from two competing companies and may order the Czech Republic to limit the aid.
Already in November, the EC received a complaint from postal competitors that the amount for basic Czech postal services was too high.

Poll: Most Czechs consider anti-coronavirus health measures adequate, half question economic support
06/24/2020Most Czechs think measures taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic were adequate and effective but less than half believe the economic response was insufficient, according to a new CVVM poll.
Since the start of the pandemic, 10,651 people have been infected with Covid-19 in the Czech Republic, 2,752 are currently ill, and 339 have died with it.
Czech economic growth slowed by 2 percent in the first quarter of 2020 in annual terms. The country is expected to lose up to 8 percent of its national GDP during the year.
MPs are now debating a proposed increase in this year's state deficit to 500 billion crowns from 40 billion in view of additional expenditures relating to the coronavirus crisis.
The government is covered 80 percent of the salary for employees of shops, restaurants, and other businesses forced to shutter under the quarantine regulations.

This year’s fruit harvest will again be meagre due to spring frosts and heavy rainfall, the Czech Fruit Union said on Tuesday. Although the harvest should increase by 3.8 percent in annual terms, it is 12 percent below the five-year average.
Frosts significantly reduced the harvest of apricots and cherries, especially in Moravia, while apple growers in Bohemia also expect a substantial drop.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has rejected an account by former US national security adviser John Bolton of their conversation on meeting NATO funding targets as a percentage of GDP.
In Bolton’s new memoir, “The Room Where It Happened,” he describes Babiš as having made “the most inept comment” at the 2018 NATO summit in Brussels, complaining that as the economy grew it was difficult to meet the 2% of GDP commitment agreed at the 2014 NATO Summit in Wales.
Babiš said on Tuesday he had in fact argued that percentage of GDP was less important than increasing the absolute amount spent and his words were misunderstood and taken out of context. Babiš said he now understood why President Trump had sacked Bolton if he could not understand such a simple thing. (In fact, Bolton resigned from the post.)

The lower house is debating a proposed increase in this year's state deficit to 500 billion crowns in view of additional expenditures relating to the coronavirus crisis. It is the third increase in the budget deficit proposed since the start of the pandemic.
In April the Chamber of Deputies agreed to increase the 2020 deficit to 300 billion crowns. Prior to the pandemic, the budget deficit was projected at 40 billion crowns. The government wants the proposal is to be debated by the lower house in a state of legislative emergency. So far the country’s highest state deficit was 192 billion crowns in 2009 due to the global economic recession.
The Communist Party, which tolerates the minority ANO-Social Democrat coalition government, said on Tuesday it plans to negotiate a change in tax rates this autumn, a year before the next elections to the lower house.

The Ministry for Regional Development will prepare an official response to the resolution passed by the European Parliament on Friday pertaining to Prime Minister Andrej Babiš' possible conflict of interest. Minister Klára Dostálová told reporters on Monday that the Czech Republic has a sophisticated system of controls in the area of financial management and adequate legislation in place to prevent conflict of interest. She said she could not understand why the European Parliament was interfering in the country‘s internal affairs.
The resolution, passed by a majority vote, says it is inadmissible for the Czech prime minister to partake in decisions on EU funds, while continuing to exert control over the multi-billion crown Agrofert conglomerate he founded, despite having placed it into trust funds. It further states that the Czech Republic lacks a clear system for protecting EU funds against misuse.
The Czech prime minister said the resolution was a political proclamation and accused the European Parliament of exerting political and media pressure on the Czech judicial system.
