The Czech minister of health, Adam Vojtěch, says his government department is planning a campaign to promote eFacemask, a mobile app intended to help contain the spread of the coronavirus. The app, which is not compulsory, is part of a “smart quarantine” system created by the government.
So far the eFacemask app has been downloaded to around 220,000 devices in the Czech Republic, which has a population of 10.7 million. It would need far broader adoption to be effective.
Mr. Vojtěch said on CNN Prima News on Sunday that the system will be promoted in the autumn, which is when other respiratory problems than Covid-19 disease are also likely to appear in the country.

Former Czech international football captain Tomáš Sivok is retiring from the game at the age of 36. The defensive midfielder/back announced the decision to hang up his boots on Saturday after his club České Budějovice failed to qualify for Europe in domestic football’s season-ending “superstructure”.
Sivok’s previous clubs include Sparta Prague, Italy’s Udinese and Turkish side Besiktas, where he spent seven seasons. He scored five goals in 70 appearances for the national team.

Retailers in the Czech Republic have begun their summer sales earlier than in previous years because of the coronavirus crisis, the Czech News Agency reported. Some shops have started offering discounts a fortnight earlier than usual and in some cases summer sales have more or less followed directly on from spring ones.
Markdowns are also higher than usual, retailers say. Customers are most likely to find bargains in big cities, which normally attract foreign tourists.

The Czech Republic lacks around 6,000 teachers and the situation could get even worse, Czech Television reported. A new bill aimed at making it easier for schools to hire university graduates who have not undergone formal teacher training should help the situation.
However, officials at the Czech Schools Inspectorate say is not clear whether some older teachers will go into retirement sooner than they originally planned due to the coronavirus situation, Czech Television said.
The average age of teachers in Czech schools is 47 and there are fears that as many as 11,000 teachers may be lacking in four years’ time.

Saturday saw 260 freshly detected cases of Covid-19 in the Czech Republic, which was the highest one-day rise since April 8 and was almost 100 more than for Friday.
The country’s chief hygiene officer, Jarmila Rážová, told Czech Radio that the jump on Friday had reflected intensive testing in parts of the country with local outbreaks of the coronavirus, including at a mine in the Moravian Silesian Region and a car parts factory in the Liberec Region.
As of Sunday morning at 8 a.m., a total of 11,298 cases of Covid-19 had been recorded in the Czech Republic. Some 347 people have died with coronavirus.

Border restrictions between the Czech Republic and the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland will be eased from next week, the Czech minster of health, Adam Vojtěch, said on Saturday. Neither Czechs nor foreigners entering Czech territory from that part of Poland will need to produce a negative test for Covid-19 or enter quarantine, he said.
Such measures have been in place because of a relatively high incidence of the coronavirus on the Polish side of the border. This has caused complications for the closely connected communities on both sides of the border.

China’s ambassador to the Czech Republic says he does not see why the countries would insist on destroying mutual relations that are in the interest of both nations. Zhang Jianmin made the comment in an interview for the Czech News Agency centred on a planned trip to Taiwan by Czech Senate speaker Miloš Vystrčil. Mr. Zhang said some people were still stuck in a Cold War mentality and overlooked facts and believed everything stemmed from ideology or political objectives.
Mr. Vystrčil has said he will visit Taiwan in late August not just for business reasons but also because in his view senior Czech politicians have not responded sufficiently to Chinese pressure to abandon the planned trip.
Earlier this year China put pressure on the previous upper house speaker, Jaroslav Kubera, to drop his intention to visit Taiwan. Mr. Kubera died of a heart attack soon afterwards.

Some 168 new cases of Covid-19 were detected in the Czech Republic on Friday, the highest figure for a single day since April 11. Daily increases have fluctuated markedly in recent weeks due to targeted testing carried out in parts of the country where local outbreaks have occurred.
On Friday comprehensive testing of workers at the ČSM-Sever mine in Stonava in Karviná in the Moravian-Silesian Region was launched.
According to Czech Ministry of Health information as of Saturday at 11 a.m., a total of 11,044 cases of the coronavirus have been discovered in the Czech Republic. Some 349 people have died with the disease it causes.
