Czechia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council represents a major opportunity to increase the country’s international influence, according to its new UN ambassador Hynek Kmoníček. Czechia is seeking a seat for 2032 and 2033, with the election scheduled for 2031. Kmoníček, who previously headed the Czech UN mission from 2001 to 2006, said securing support for the bid would be his main priority. He argued that membership would make Czechia more relevant to major global powers, which would need its vote on the Security Council.

Czech Interior Minister Lubomír Metnar (ANO) and his Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner have called for stronger protection of both the EU’s external borders and their countries’ shared border. Meeting at the Czech-Austrian police cooperation centre near Mikulov on Friday, the ministers discussed illegal migration, people smuggling and EU migration policy. They also praised the centre, which has facilitated cross-border police cooperation since 2006. Austria introduced controls on its border with Czechia in 2023 and extended them again in June, while shifting towards more flexible checks aimed primarily at smugglers and criminals.

However, only 11 percent have a comprehensive strategy for water management. The survey of 300 municipalities found that the main obstacles to investment are insufficient funding, complicated property ownership and complex subsidy programmes. Nevertheless, many municipalities are taking measures, with 82 percent investing in greenery and 71 percent in rainwater drainage. Almost half plan to invest between CZK 1 million and CZK 10 million in water-management projects over the next three years.
