Czech President Petr Pavel says he has not yet decided whether to seek a second term and rejects claims that he is already campaigning for re-election. Speaking to CNN Prima News, Pavel said he plans to announce his decision in the middle of next year and would only begin campaigning after formally declaring his candidacy. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has repeatedly accused the president of already running a campaign. Pavel said his decision would depend primarily on his and his family’s health, as well as the level of public support for another presidential bid.

Wages in Czechia continued to rise rapidly in the second quarter, according to analysts surveyed by the Czech News Agency. They estimate that the average nominal wage increased by just over seven percent year-on-year, slightly slower than the 8.1 percent recorded in the first quarter. With inflation remaining relatively low, real wages are also expected to have risen, by around five percent. Analysts say the tight labour market continues to push salaries higher, although wage growth is likely to gradually slow. The Czech Statistical Office will publish the official second-quarter figures on Thursday.

Sparta Prague host defending champions Slavia in the first Prague derby of the season on Sunday evening. Unbeaten Slavia lead the Czech league table, but after two consecutive draws their advantage over Sparta has narrowed to two points. A home victory would therefore put Sparta ahead of their city rivals. The match comes less than four months after the previous derby was abandoned after Slavia supporters invaded the pitch and clashed with Sparta players. Sparta and Prague police say they have been preparing enhanced security measures for several weeks. The match at Sparta’s Letná stadium kicks off at 8 pm.

The Czech military is developing a new information system designed to give state institutions a shared overview during emergencies. The system will connect data from government databases, sensors and control centres as well as NATO and EU sources. It will also include a counter-drone module and changes to the public warning system. Rather than relying on a single computer or data centre, it will operate as a network designed to continue functioning even if parts of the infrastructure fail. Representatives of 37 public institutions met in Brno this week to discuss the project.

Czechia has spent around CZK 19 billion, or USD 920 million, on Covid vaccines since 2020, but used less than half of the 41 million doses it received. Around four million doses were donated abroad, while more than 18 million expired and were destroyed. The discarded vaccines were worth around CZK 8 billion, or USD 390 million. The Health Ministry said the purchases were made amid considerable uncertainty over the future course of the pandemic and demand for boosters. Czechia will have 900,000 doses available for the upcoming vaccination season.

NATO is capable of immediately and effectively defending its territory in the event of a military attack, Czech ambassador to the alliance David Konecký says. He said NATO was significantly better prepared than before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukrainin 2022 and would defend every part of allied territory. Konecký does not expect a large-scale conflict between NATO and Russia in the next few years, provided the alliance continues strengthening its deterrence. He also highlighted the growing threat posed by drones and said NATO was seeking more cost-effective ways of countering them.

Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) has criticised Czech intelligence services for failing to inform him promptly about a disinformation campaign suggesting Poland was seeking Czech territory. Babiš said he first learned from the media about a fake social media profile purporting to belong to the Czech ambassador to Poland. The campaign also involved a fake Czech Radio website. President Petr Pavel described the operation as a deliberate provocation aimed at damaging Czech-Polish relations. He said he had no information linking the campaign to Russia, although he noted that Moscow had previously conducted similar destabilising operations.
