A new pipe organ installed in St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle was blessed during a liturgy led by Prague Archbishop Stanislav Přibyl on Monday evening. The rite of blessing the instrument, which was financed from public donations, was performed by his predecessor, Jan Graubner.
The ceremony included the symbolic “awakening” of the organ. Works by Dvořák, Handel, Haydn and Saint-Saëns were performed with the accompaniment of the Czech Philharmonic and several choirs. German organ builder Gerhard Grenzing who created the exceptional instrument also took part in the celebrations.
More than 135 million crowns were raised for the new organ through a nationwide public fundraising campaign involving thousands of donors.

The Czech government is set to discuss a proposal to abolish television and radio licence fees and replace them with direct state funding for public broadcasters. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said ministers are also expected to decide how much funding Czech Television and Czech Radio would receive under the new system, with annual inflation adjustments built in. The cabinet will also consider legislation allowing the Supreme Audit Office to examine the finances of the two public broadcasters. The plan has drawn criticism from the opposition, media experts and employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio, who remain on strike alert.

Government and opposition politicians clashed over a proposed amendment to Czechia’s conflict-of-interest law during a Sunday debate on Czech Television. Finance Minister Alena Schillerová (ANO) rejected claims that the bill was drafted to benefit Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, arguing it merely aligns Czech legislation with rules elsewhere in the European Union and noting that Babiš transferred Agrofert, the conglomerate he founded, into trust funds. Opposition leaders countered that the amendment could shield Agrofert from repaying billions of crowns in subsidies that courts ruled were awarded unlawfully between 2017 and 2021. They also vowed to challenge the law before the Constitutional Court if it is passed.

Freedom and Direct Democracy Party (SPD) leader Tomio Okamura said during a televised debate that he would immediately end temporary protection for Ukrainians who fled Russia’s invasion if it were up to him, arguing that too many refugees are living in Czechia. Civic Democratic Party (ODS) chairman Martin Kupka condemned the remarks as “outrageous” and said they justified critics who describe Okamura as a “commercial fascist.” Kupka argued that around 400,000 Ukrainian refugees help fill labor shortages in sectors such as construction, healthcare and social services, while also helping Czechia qualify for an exemption from parts of the EU migration pact. Nearly 398,000 Ukrainians currently hold temporary protection status in the country.
