Czech police are set to receive translations of key documents from foreign diplomatic and intelligence services in the coming days, which could shed light on the death of former Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk. Masaryk fell from a window in Prague’s Czernin Palace on March 10, 1948, with the official version stating it was suicide. However, newly obtained diplomatic archives from France, the US and the UK suggest otherwise, prompting the reopening of the case.

According to Dalimil Sypták, director of the Office for Documentation and Investigation of Crimes of Communism, several citizens have since come forward with their testimonies. Past investigations, including one from 2001 to 2003, leaned toward assassination but couldn't rule out suicide or accident. The last probe, closed in 2021, reached no definitive conclusion. Police now aim to compare the new evidence with previous findings to uncover the truth behind Masaryk’s death.

People in Czechia had the chance to observe a partial solar eclipse around noon on Saturday, although visibility was limited by cloud cover. Experts said it was one of the best eclipses in recent years, as the Sun was high in the sky at its peak.

Observers were urged to wear special glasses or filters to protect their eyes, as conventional telescopes were not safe for viewing. Public viewing events were hosted by observatories, offering safe viewing through specialized equipment.

The eclipse, during which the Moon covered up to 22 percent of the solar disk, began around 11:29 a.m. and lasted about an hour and a half. The duration varied slightly across different parts of the country.

The police have accused three former State Security (StB) officers of causing the expulsion of a student from the Faculty of Arts at Charles University and his internment in a psychiatric hospital at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, Chief Commissioner Iveta Kořínková reported on the police website on Friday. Criminal investigators are currently prosecuting them for the crime of abuse of official authority, which carries a penalty of up to ten years in prison if convicted.

A court on Friday sentenced Pavel Rus to seven and a half years in prison for sending anti-Semitic documents to institutions and officials, and sending death threats to judges and prosecutors. From midday on Friday, a state of emergency is in force in the vicinity of Hustopeče nad Bečvou in the Přerov area, having been declared by the Olomouc Region's governor Ladislav Okleštěk, due to the spread of toxic benzene after February’s tanker accident. The state of emergency will allow for faster remediation of contaminated soil and water. The regulation is valid until April 27th. The declaration of a state of emergency was unanimously supported on Friday by the regional security council.

The crisis staff of the Ministry of the Environment on Wednesday recommended that the governor declare this measure. With a valid state of emergency, the regional leadership gains special powers; for example, it can immediately carry out construction work and landscape management if it is necessary to mitigate or avert the threat. The damage caused by the derailment and fire of the benzene tankers is estimated to be around a billion crowns.
