A contribution for participation in preventive healthcare could amount to several thousand crowns, according to Health Minister Adam Vojtěch. Insurance companies could compete with each other through the amount offered. He said this at today’s debate organized by Seznam Zprávy platform. About half of the population in Czechia attends preventive check-ups with general practitioners, and even fewer take part in screenings for early cancer detection.
“Participation in preventive programmes is strongly influenced by socioeconomic status. We expect this could help bring low-income groups more into prevention,” Vojtěch said. According to him, it is crucial that the contribution is not tied to individual applications but is automatically paid to people’s accounts.

Reducing the size of agricultural fields can significantly decrease vole populations in the landscape and thus reduce the damage these rodents cause to farmers, according to scientists. Smaller areas are less attractive to voles, and the positive effect extends across the entire agricultural landscape. Smaller fields can also reduce crop damage and the frequency of interventions, including the use of poisons to control voles. This follows from a study by researchers from the Faculty of Science at Palacký University Olomouc, Mendel University in Brno, and the National Centre for Agricultural and Food Research in Prague.
Scientists found that reducing the average field size from 18 hectares to 13 hectares leads to about an eight percent decrease in the average population of the common vole, while reducing it from ten to five hectares results in a drop of about 15 percent.

Almost half of Czechia’s territory is already affected by the three most severe levels of soil drought, with 13 percent of the country experiencing extreme drought, according to the latest map on the InterSucho project website. The situation is significantly worse in the topsoil layer up to 40 centimetres, especially as crops are just beginning to emerge. The reason is also a warm winter with very little precipitation, said climatologist Pavel Zahradníček from the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute and the CzechGlobe.
Soil drought up to a depth of one metre began to develop gradually in March and worsened significantly in April, when temperatures rose and vegetation started consuming water. Only 14 percent of the territory shows no signs of drought. Scientists define it as a deviation from the average state between 1961 and 2015.

Czechia is not meeting the defence spending it committed to within the NATO, nor the military capacities it promised to ensure for collective defence. If all NATO members behaved this way, its collective defence would become ineffective, President Petr Pavel said today at a conference of CNN Prima News called Money Money Money. According to him, sufficient defence strength is the best way to prevent possible aggression by a foreign state.
According to Sunday’s statement by Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, Czechia will not meet this year’s commitment to spend two percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) on defence. Pavel pointed out that the country is fulfilling only about 50 percent of the promised defence capacities for NATO.

The Czech Republic is not yet prepared for the efficient construction of a high-speed rail network planned for completion around 2050. The state has not established the necessary conditions for construction, has not identified funding sources, and has not finalized negotiations with neighboring countries on cross-border connections. It has also failed to fully demonstrate the expected benefits, according to an audit by the Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ).
The audit warns that expected benefits, such as time savings, regional development, and lower costs for transport operators, may not materialize. For example, achieving time savings requires both complete routes and modernized stations, yet the Prague rail hub is not scheduled for modernization until 2047, while the Prague–Brno high-speed line is expected to open by 2036.
The Transport Ministry, however, says the NKÚ’s conclusions are outdated, as the project has already been updated.

The hospital the state plans to build in Prague’s Letňany district will be a military hospital, Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said today on the social network X. It will include several underground floors that could be converted into a crisis headquarters.
Before departing for Azerbaijan, Babiš linked the decision to the NATO commitment for defense spending of 2% of GDP, which the Czech Republic is required to meet as a member of the alliance. He also added that Czechia would thus take inspiration from other NATO member states. He cited Turkey as an example, saying it is meeting the 2% target partly thanks to the construction of military hospitals.
At the beginning of this year, Health Minister Adam Vojtěch (ANO) said that parts of hospitals currently located on the right bank of the Vltava River would be moved to the new facility, including Bulovka University Hospital, Královské Vinohrady University Hospital, and the General University Hospital.
