Czech President Petr Pavel says NATO and the European Union are not competitors when it comes to European defence but should complement each other. He made the comment at the start of GLOBSEC Forum, a three-day international security conference that began in Prague on Thursday.

Mr. Pavel called for continued support for Ukraine, which he said was not only defending Europe in its efforts to repel the Russians but also changing the way Europe thinks about warfare.

The Czech head of state said technology would play a key role in future conflicts and that the EU and the United States should inspire one another in the field of AI, rather than cooperating.

According to the organisers, the programme will focus on the global systemic transformation that is fundamentally changing the international order, technology, defence and energy. Petr Pavel said on Wednesday at the Fragile Security conference that Russia will remain the greatest security threat to Europe in the coming decades and that security cannot be postponed until tomorrow. He also stated that Europe had grown accustomed to comfort and security and had relied on the United States, which according to Pavel no longer wants to be the guarantor that solves everything for Europe.

Pavel recalled that 435 days have passed since Ukraine, which Russia attacked in February 2022, agreed to the American proposal for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. “And Russia’s response? Excuses, lies and ultimatums,” he said. According to him, history is now returning, great powers are once again testing borders and pushing them where they encounter the least resistance.

Losses to fruit production caused by spring frosts in the Czech Republic are expected to reach around CZK 1–1.5 billion, according to estimates by fruit growers. The harvest is projected to be 51% lower compared to the five-year average, Agriculture Minister Martin Šebestyán and the head of the Fruit Growers Union of the Czech Republic Martin Ludvík told journalists.

The minister has already asked the European Commission for support for domestic growers and is expected to discuss the situation in Brussels next week.

This year’s damage is likely the second-largest on record after 2024, when spring frosts reduced the fruit harvest by two-thirds, marking the lowest yield in 100 years. According to Ludvík, losses then reached about CZK 1.45 billion, while fruit prices have since increased by roughly 10%.

Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka (Motorists) said he would like to complete the relocation of the Czech embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of his term in office. He told journalists this after a meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar at Prague’s Černín Palace. According to Macinka, the move could be timed to a symbolic moment, but it will ultimately be a decision of the cabinet.

Macinka and Saar jointly opened a Czech-Israeli business forum earlier in the day at Černín Palace. According to the ministers, more than 50 Israeli companies and around 150 Czech representatives are taking part. The companies are focused mainly on defence and cybersecurity, as well as healthcare.

Five EU member states, including Czechia, have called on the European Commission to reconsider its current approach to integrating the Western Balkans into the EU and to offer these countries membership prospects and related benefits in “stages”.

The proposal suggests so-called sectoral integration as a way to keep candidate countries outside the Russian sphere of influence. Under the plan, Western Balkan states could gain access to selected EU programmes even before full membership.

The document mentions areas such as transport, energy and the electricity market, the digital single market, competitiveness policy, critical raw materials policy, and student mobility.

The Western Balkans region includes Albania, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia and Serbia.

The Sudeten German Homeland Association no longer sees the Beneš decrees as an issue, Rudolf Fischer, head of the association’s Berlin branch, told ČTK.

Fischer said he was surprised by the debate in Czechia surrounding the upcoming gathering of Sudeten Germans in Brno. However, he believes the debate will not damage Czech relations with Germany or Austria, since neither side can afford such damage economically.

The gathering begins on Friday and will be held in Czechia for the first time. Last week, the governing parties ANO, SPD and Motorists approved a resolution calling for it not to take place.

The term “Beneš decrees” refers to the legal framework of post-war Czechoslovakia governing the expulsion of Germans after WWII. They were formally ratified in 1946.
