The President of the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic, Josef Baxa, warned today against signs of authoritarianism during a memorial ceremony in Terezín. He compared the current atmosphere in society to the period before the rise of Nazism. He urged people not to remain indifferent and to defend fundamental values and institutions. The commemorative event marking the 81st anniversary of the end of the Second World War was also attended by President Petr Pavel, politicians, diplomats, and scouts.
“Today’s era painfully resembles the world ninety years ago. Gathering clouds,” Baxa said.
He called on the public to listen carefully to the statements of liars. According to him, they appear less obvious today than in the past: while they promise to establish order that will protect society, hidden between the lines of their statements is an attack on the fundamental values and institutions that safeguard it.

The Czech government will discuss on Monday a proposal to increase the parental allowance from 350,000 to 400,000 Czech crowns. It may also support a proposal to make one-day motorway vignettes valid for a full 24 hours, rather than only until midnight on the day of purchase. In connection with European regulations, the government will also propose changes to environmental crimes legislation.
Also on the agenda is an amendment concerning balanced representation of women and men in the leadership of large commercial companies, which the Czech Republic was supposed to implement by the end of December 2024. The country now faces the possibility of a lawsuit and a fine of at least three million euros (approximately 73 million Czech crowns).
The government is also expected to issue a favorable opinion on a Senate proposal that would make a one-day motorway vignette valid for 24 hours instead of expiring at midnight on the day of purchase. According to senators, the amendment is intended to help drivers who do not normally use motorways but occasionally need to travel on one at night.

The coalition council will discuss the draft law on public service media on May 25. After reaching agreement within the coalition, the proposal will then be submitted to the government for consideration. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) announced this today in his Sunday video on social media. According to him, a public debate will also take place with the directors-general of Czech Television and Czech Radio about the planned changes.
Under the proposal, Czech Radio and Czech Television would no longer receive funding through licence fees paid by households and companies, but instead through a fixed amount from the state budget. According to the plan, Czech Television would operate next year with a budget of 5.74 billion Czech crowns, compared with 8.5 billion crowns this year. Czech Radio would receive 2.07 billion crowns from the state, around 400 million less than it currently receives from licence fees.
The proposal has been criticized by experts, the opposition, and the management of both media organizations. Critics describe it as a nationalization of public media and warn that it could limit their independence while further increasing state debt. Employees of Czech Television and Czech Radio entered a state of strike alert on April 22, demanding that the government abandon the plan.

Experts have successfully removed the skull of St. Zdislava from concrete. The precious relic remains intact and will now undergo restoration work. Police announced the news this morning on X. According to investigators, the skull was stolen on Tuesday from the basilica in Jablonné v Podještědí in the Liberec region by a thirty-five-year-old man, who was detained on Thursday. The man had encased the relic — of incalculable historical value — in concrete with the intention of burying it. On Saturday, a court in Česká Lípa decided not to place the man in custody; he will be prosecuted while remaining at liberty.
Prague Archbishop Stanislav Přibyl, who is also the administrator of the Litoměřice Diocese, to which the basilica in Jablonné v Podještědí belongs, told journalists on Friday that if the skull of St. Zdislava is displayed again, it should only be exhibited behind bulletproof glass and protected by an electronic security system connected directly to the police.

Czech players will play their group stage matches in Guadalajara against South Korea, in Atlanta against South Africa, and in Mexico City against the home national team.

A training exercise called SAFEGUARD 2026 will begin on Monday, May 18, near the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant. Its aim is to test preparedness for ensuring external protection of one of the most heavily guarded facilities in the Czech Republic. The exercise will be closed to the public and will take place both within the plant area and its surroundings.
“During the exercise, soldiers of the Czech Army will be moving in the area. Training gunfire or smoke effects may be heard or seen, and no reaction is necessary. The exercise has no impact on employees or on the normal life of the public,” said Jana Štefánková, spokesperson for the plant, regarding the planned event.
She added that troops will begin arriving at the Dukovany plant on Monday, May 18, and will remain in the area until Thursday, May 21.

Penalties for harming the environment are expected to be significantly increased, potentially up to 10 years in prison. This is included in an amendment to the Criminal Code, which also revises the definitions of existing environmental crimes and introduces new ones, including the prosecution of perpetrators of so-called “ecocide,” meaning the most severe forms of ecological disasters. The proposal from the Ministry of Justice, which is based on a relevant European directive, will be discussed by the government on Monday.
The authors of the amendment pointed out that in the Czech Republic, the vast majority of illegal acts against the environment are currently treated only as misdemeanors, which has been criticized. The effectiveness of prosecuting this type of crime is also low. Between 2000 and 2024, around 100 people and 8 companies were convicted of environmental crimes. Offenders most often received suspended sentences or fines. Only in two cases did courts send them to prison. The highest corporate fine amounted to 600,000 Czech crowns.

The risk of importing the Ebola virus from the Democratic Republic of Congo into the Czech Republic is, according to public health officials, low. Travelers should monitor their health for 21 days after returning from high-risk areas and, if they experience any health problems, contact a doctor by phone. This was stated on the social network X by the Czech Public Health Authority, which falls under the Ministry of Health.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced on Friday that 65 people have died in Congo due to an Ebola outbreak, with another 250 suspected cases of infection. One case has also been reported in Uganda.
“Travelers to affected areas are advised to strictly follow hand hygiene, avoid consuming bushmeat, avoid visiting caves and places where bats are present, and limit visits to healthcare facilities in affected regions to necessary cases only,” the health officials said.
