Police will investigate whether a woman who displayed a Soviet flag during a Brno city council meeting committed an offence by promoting communism, municipal police spokesman Jakub Ghanem said on Tuesday.
The woman was among several opponents of the upcoming Sudeten German conference, due to take place in Brno this weekend - the first time the event will be held in the Czech Republic.
“You will be tried for collaboration, for undermining the republic and for joining forces with a foreign power,” she told councilors, before pulling out the flag.
Municipal police escorted her from the chamber and verified her identity. According to police, the case will now be reviewed by state authorities.

Former national drug policy coordinator Jindřich Vobořil has criticised the government’s planned transfer of the country’s anti-drug agenda from the Government Office to the Health Ministry, calling it a big mistake.
According to Vobořil, the Health Ministry lacks the authority to coordinate policies involving customs, gambling, illegal trafficking and law enforcement measures. He also warned of potential complications in the distribution of subsidies to social services.
The government approved the transfer on Monday, with the move set to take effect in July.

EG.D, the distribution company of the E.ON Group, has filed a lawsuit against the Czech Energy Regulatory Office over what it describes as an unfavourable setting of regulated electricity prices.
According to the news website Ekonomický deník, customers in South Bohemia and the southern half of Moravia could face higher electricity prices if the distributor succeeds in court.
The Energy Regulatory Office said it is confident it will succeed in defending its policy. A spokesperson noted that the country’s other distributors — ČEZ Distribuce and PREdistribuce — did not challenge the regulated pricing framework for this year.

The composition of Czechia’s lower house of parliament, as determined by last year’s election, is now final after the Constitutional Court rejected the last outstanding legal challenge. The complaint was filed by Petr Beitl, the Liberec regional leader of the Spolu coalition, who failed to win a seat after his region lost a quarter of its parliamentary mandates compared with previous elections, with seats redistributed to other regions. Beitl had challenged parts of the electoral law, particularly the method used to convert votes into seats in the second round of allocation. The court said judges cannot change clearly established electoral rules after an election has taken place and then apply those new interpretations retroactively to alter the result.

Czechia’s ice hockey team bounced back from their upset loss to Slovenia by defeating Sweden 4–3 in a dramatic group-stage clash at the World Championship in Fribourg. The Czechs stormed into a 3–0 lead in the opening 13 minutes through Matěj Blümel, Dominik Kubalík and Jakub Flek. But a major penalty for defender Jan Ščotka allowed Sweden back into the game, with two power-play goals before the first break. Jiří Černoch restored a two-goal cushion in the second period, though Sweden again replied with the man advantage. Goaltender Josef Kořenář then made a series of crucial saves to preserve the lead.

Czech President Petr Pavel is prepared to appoint Lieutenant General Miroslav Hlaváč as the country’s next chief of the general staff after the government approved his nomination. The presidential office said Pavel considers Hlaváč a strong candidate because of his military leadership experience, education and current role as deputy chief of the general staff. Defence Minister Jaromír Zůna (SPD), who proposed the candidates, did not support Hlaváč in the cabinet vote, saying he had preferred someone else. Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) called Hlaváč the natural choice, highlighting continuity in military leadership. Parliament’s defence committee will review the nomination before formal appointment.

Czech President Petr Pavel has granted patronage to the Meeting Brno festival, which this year will host the convention of the Sudeten German association for the first time in Czechia. The presidential office said the backing applies to the festival as a whole, supporting dialogue about history rather than endorsing every interpretation of it. The event promotes reconciliation and open discussion, it said. The gathering remains politically controversial. The lower house recently called for its cancellation, while Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (ANO) said no government representative would attend. Bavarian premier Markus Söder is expected to visit both Brno and Prague.
