Prime Minister Petr Fiala has said that Czech companies should be encouraged to get involved in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine and that it is necessary to start preparing for the end of the war now, so that when it happens, it will be possible to help immediately. He made these statements before departing for a conference on this very topic in Lugano, Switzerland.

Mr. Fiala also stated that the post-war reconstruction of the country, which was invaded by Russia on February 24, will be a task for all key players from the democratic world, but Ukrainians themselves should be the ones to decide on the priorities. He therefore considers it important that Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, with whom Fiala plans to hold bilateral meetings, will attend the conference in Lugano.

Mr. Fiala underscored that Czechia will continue to support Ukraine with supplies of military equipment, repairs of military equipment and humanitarian aid. Experts estimate that the reconstruction of Ukraine will cost hundreds of billions of euros.

The European Union must work together against Russia, even though the member states legitimately have different stances on many issues, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala wrote in an article published on the Brussels website Politico on Monday. He said the Czech presidency, which Czechia took over from France on Friday, will take into account differences in opinion, but that unity is needed in order to achieve progress.

EU countries are not united on further sanctions against Russia, with Hungary in particular trying to block any extension of the sanctions in recent weeks. Member states are also not of one mind about ending the supply of Russian gas to Europe, with some member states refusing to consider it, citing economic impacts. Mr. Fiala said that ending dependence on Russian oil and gas is vitally important, as Russia uses its energy supplies to Europe as a weapon, for example, by stopping gas deliveries to some countries but not others.

Starting from September, the Czech Republic will help Slovakia with securing the latter’s airspace, Prime Minister Petr Fiala told Czech Television on Sunday. Slovakia requested the help from the Czech Republic in June, to fill in the period of time during which the country will have to wait before it receives the F-16 combat aircraft it ordered to replace its Mig-29s.

Mr Fiala highlighted that Slovakia borders Ukraine, which is currently the target of Russian aggression, and that the protection of the country’s airspace is also in the interest of the Czech Republic. His Slovak counterpart, Eduard Heger, said he expects Slovakia will need Czech assistance for a period of roughly one year. He also didn’t rule out Slovakia sending its Mig-29s to Ukraine.

Folowing similar words stated by members of the ruling coalition government, Prime Minister Petr Fiala on Saturday expressed himself in favour of the Czech Republic adopting an energy sector tax, that would be mainly aimed at energy companies. Mr Fiala said that it would be an expression of solidarity at a time when many people are facing extremely high energy prices, Czech Television reports.

The public broadcaster reported last week that most government parties are in favour of implementing a special tax on energy companies, which are currently seeing a massive rise in profits amid the energy crisis. A proposal by the Pirate Party, which could be put into place either in October 2022 or January next year, expects the implementation of a 25 percent income tax on the relevant parties. The party expects that this could add between CZK 10 billion to CZK 20 billion into the treasury, Czech Television reports.

Speaking to CNN Prima News on Sunday, President Miloš Zeman said he is sympathetic to the idea. He also said that he doesn’t think that the government is doing enough to help alleviate inflation pressures on the population.
