    Temperatures in the 30s Celsius are expected in Czechia on Wednesday and Thursday – and highs of up to 35 degrees Celsius may be recorded, according to a forecast from the Czech Hydro-Meteorological Institute issued on Monday.

    The forecasters said that there is also a chance of heavy storms in some places.

    Cooler temperatures of around 20 or 25 degrees Celsius are due at the end of the week.

    Some 277 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in Czechia on Sunday, the same number as seven days earlier.

    There were 808 people in hospital with the virus, down from over 1,000 the previous week.

    The seven-day case incidence rate stood at 117 per 100,000 inhabitants on Sunday, which also represented a decline.

    Since the coronavirus pandemic began over 4 million cases have been recorded in Czechia, which has a population of 10.7 million.

    Families whose gross income last year was below one million crowns can apply for a one-off payment of up to CZK 5,000 in child allowance. The payment applies for any children still under the age of 18 on 1 August.

    The contribution is intended to help mitigate the effects of rising prices on families. According to estimates, 1.6 million children could be entitled to the benefit and the total expense for the government could amount to about CZK 7.8 billion.

    The application can be submitted online via the Ministry of Labour website or in person at town halls or regional offices. Foreign citizens can also receive the benefit if they have children with permanent residence and domicile in the Czech Republic.

    Czech climber Adam Ondra has won the men’s Lead gold at the European sport climbing championships in Munich. In Sunday’s final, Ondra reached the 37th hold, along with Slovenian Luka Potocar, but his time was faster.

    It is the 29-year-old’s second medal from the European championship, after securing bronze in Boulder on Saturday. On Thursday, Ondra will compete for a medal in the new Boulder and lead category.

    A pilot died after his aircraft crashed into a house during an air show in the Western Bohemian town of Cheb on Sunday. The pilot died and one person was injured, the Czech News Agency reported.

    According to organizers, police have already launched an investigation into what may have caused the accident.

    The plane was a British Hawker Hurricane fighter aircraft designed for RAF, which was said to be the last in the world considered safe for operation.

    A Czech Film Week gets underway in Israel on Monday, presenting the best of Czech and Czechoslovak films in cinemas in Tel- Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa.

    The event, organised by Czech Centre Tel Aviv and the Czech House in Jerusalem, will open with a screening of the critically acclaimed film Occupation, which will be presented by its director Michal Nohejl.

    The programme will also mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of the Oscar-winning director Miloš Forman, presenting his films Black Peter and The Firemen's Ball.

    The number of aviation accidents in Czechia increased by more than ten percent last year to 81, according to data published by the Institute for the Investigation of Aviation Accidents. The number of reported incidents increased by 17 percent to 946.

    All of the accidents involved small aircraft used for sport or recreational purposes. Ten people lost their lives in the crashes, which is four more than in 2020.

    The institute says that despite the increase, the number of incidents was still lower than in the pre-Covid period.

    Some 570 new cases of Covid-19 were registered in Czechia on Saturday, 51 more than on the same day last week. It is the first-week on-week increase in Covid numbers registered since the start of July.

    To the contrary, the number people hospitalised with Covid continues to drop. On Saturday, there were 854 Covid patients in Czech hospitals, with around 30 of them in a critical condition.

    The seven-day incidence rate was 117 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on Saturday. The highest number of infected is in Prague, where it stands at 154.
