Trade union leader and presidential candidate Josef Středula has called on the Czech government to immediately start addressing the energy crisis.
In an open letter addressed to Prime Minister Petr Fiala, Mr Středula said that due to rising energy prices and the government’s lack of action, uncertainty was growing and could become worse in autumn.
Mr Středula said he had already asked President Miloš Zeman for a meeting, adding that he would also like to discuss the situation with members of the Lower House.

Price rises in various sectors of the Czech economy continued to accelerate in July, according to data released by the Czech Statistics Office on Tuesday.
Prices in the agriculture sector rose by 39.8 percent year-on-year and in the industry sector prices rose by 26.8 percent. Meanwhile, in the construction sector, prices grew year-on-year by 13 percent.
Compared to the previous month, price development in July was relatively stable, with the exception of the agriculture sector, which saw a month-on-month drop of 3.6 percent.

Czech athlete Tomáš Staněk took the bronze in the men’s shot put event at the European Championships in Munich with a throw of 21.26 metres, securing the Czech team's first medal. Filip Mihaljevic of Croatia came first with 21.88 meters, followed by Armin Sinančević of Serbia.
For the 31-year-old Czech, who is last year's European indoor champion, this is his first medal from an outdoor championship. He finished fourth at both the 2017 World Championships and the 2018 European Championships.

Czechs’ financial literacy slightly improved last year, according to an annual survey commissioned by the Czech Banking Association. According to the index, Czechs picked up 56 points out of a possible 100, compared to 55 in the previous year.
The survey also suggests that there are significant differences in financial literacy based on the respondents’ education. While those with a university degree scored an average of 62 points, those with a primary school education or an apprenticeship certificate only scored 48 points.
According to the survey, three-quarters of Czechs say the current high inflation threatens their family budget. At the same time, about two-fifths of people do not plan to take any measures to protect their finances from inflation.

Czech parents have already submitted more than 200,000 applications for a CZK 5,000 contribution in child allowance since Monday, when the system was launched.
The one-off payment applies to any children still under the age of 18 on 1 August and is intended to help mitigate the effects of rising prices on families.
According to estimates, around 1.6 million children could be entitled to the benefit and the total expense for the government could amount to about CZK 7.8 billion.
The application can be submitted online via the Ministry of Labour website or in person at town halls or regional offices.

After a two-week holiday, the Czech cabinet will hold an informal meeting at the Liblice Chateau near Mělník in Central Bohemia on Tuesday afternoon. Ministers are expected to focus on strategy, with a particular emphasis on responding to the energy crisis.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala is also expected to discuss the head of the Office for Foreign Affairs and Relations, Petr Mlejnek, with the minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan. Mr. Mlejnek has been criticised for his contacts with Michal Redl, an influential businessman implicated in a major criminal investigation.

The budget of the Czech Ministry of Defence should rise by CZK 20 billion to a record CZK 110 billion next year, Czech Television reported. It said agreement on the increase had been reached by the minister of finance, Zbyněk Stanujra, and the minister of defence, Jana Černochová.
Defence spending is then expected to rise to CZK 155 billion by 2025, under previously announced government plans. This would mean that Czechia had fulfilled its NATO commitment to invest 2 percent of its GDP in defence.
The government plans to take in hundreds more soldiers and buy new military vehicles, helicopters and munitions.

The Czech minister of health, Vlastimil Válek, says the government is ready for a fresh wave of Covid-19 in the autumn but will not introduce any draconian measures to curb the spread of the virus. Mr. Válek made the comment on Monday at a presentation of the latest Czech vaccination strategy, which bears the slogan Let's vaccinate for a life without fear.
People in Czechia may register for a further booster vaccination against Covid-19 from Monday. While doctors have been administering such jabs since the middle of last month, registration in advance has not been possible until now.

A Czech producer has criticised the Ministry of Defence for ignoring domestic companies in a tender process to supply unmanned aerial vehicles and selecting an Israeli firm instead.
The director of Primoco UAV SE, Ladislav Semetkovský, has called on the Czech prime minister, Petr Fiala, to intervene in the matter and ensure that Czech companies are included in the tender process.
The Ministry of Defence said that it started talks to buy three unmanned aerial vehicles from the Israeli producer Heron 1 because they met the Czech Army’s technical requirements perfectly.

The Czech scientist Mojmír Petráň died on Saturday at the age of 99, the country’s Learned Society, of which he was a member, said.
In the 1960s Mr. Petráň and a colleague, Milan Hadravský, developed a revolutionary new type of microscope – which they patented in the United States in 1967 – that made a major contribution to a boom in molecular cell biology.
Mr. Petráň was also a member of the resistance during the Nazi occupation.
