    People who are in isolation with Covid, will be able to cast their vote in the presidential elections as of Wednesday, i.e. two days before polling stations open for the general public. People with Covid will be able to vote at special drive-ins. According to the Interior Ministry there will be several in each region, usually one per district, and five in Prague. The drive-in polling stations will be open from 8am to 5pm. People who cannot vote from their cars can order a portable ballot box to their homes.

    As of Sunday, January 8, passengers travelling from Czechia to China will have to undergo a PCR test for Covid within 48 hours before boarding a plane heading directly to China, the Chinese Embassy in Prague said in a statement posted on its website. Since there are currently no direct flights from Czechia to China the measure applies to connecting flights.

    Meanwhile the Czech authorities announced on Friday that Czechia would no,t for the time being, introduce a requirement for compulsory PCR Covid tests for travelers coming from China. In view of the upsurge of Covid cases in China the EU has recommended that countries with direct air links to the Asian state introduce this requirement.

    The Christian Democratic Party has criticized President Miloš Zeman's refusal to appoint their nominee Petr Hladík to the post of environment minister as “unconstitutional”. The party leadership, which met on Friday to decide how to resolve the situation said it would abide by its decision and not appoint a different nominee in view of the fact that the president’s term in office ends in March. Deputy Prime Minister and Christian Democratic Party leader Marian Jurečka said he intended to appoint Hladík deputy environment minister in the coming days and get him actively involved in the ministry’s management, until there was a new president in office.

    Businesswoman Renata Kellner is ranked 12th on Forbes’ list of the world's richest women. The 55-year-old widow of PPF investment group owner Petr Kellner, who died in a tragic accident last year, has a fortune of USD 16.3 billion (over CZK 372 billion), according to the magazine. She is ranked 100th overall, higher than any other Czech.

    Czechia will not for the time being introduce a requirement for compulsory PCR Covid tests for travelers coming from China, the Czech Health Ministry announced. Its spokesman said this was not considered necessary for the time being since there is no direct air link from China, but the decision could be reviewed in the future.

    European Union member states agreed on Wednesday to "strongly encourage" a requirement that would obligate all travelers coming from China, regardless of nationality, to present a negative COVID-19 test as the number of infections surges in the Asian country. The decision, which is not legally binding, was made by the EU's integrated political crisis response (IPCR), a body that helps coordinate crisis management among the 27 member states.

    The Christian Democrats of the ruling coalition will meet on Friday to consider further action after President Miloš Zeman refused to appoint their nominee Petr Hladík to the post of environment minister. Party leader Marian Jurečka has indicated that, since President Zeman’s mandate ends in March, the party may choose to wait rather than look for a new nominee.

    Hladík said after a meeting with Zeman on Wednesday that the president was not ready to appoint him to office. The president reportedly expressed reservations regarding lack of experience and Hladík's involvement in a corruption case pertaining to the allocation of city flats in Brno, where he is deputy mayor.  The police raided Hladík's office but have not proposed filing charges against him.

    The Czech hockey team lost 3:2 to Canada in the final of the Under-20 World Championship in Halifax after a hard-fought overtime. Coach Radim Rulík's team won the first ever silver for Czechia in the junior’s league, and the first medal in 18 years. Canada won its 20th title.

    The price of eggs will go up as a result of the bird flu outbreaks which have led to the culling of hundreds of thousands of hens in Czechia, Gabriela Dlouhá, chairwoman of the Poultry Breeders' Union told the ctk news agency. She said consumers do not need to fear a shortage of eggs since they would be imported, but at a higher cost. The losses incurred have been considerable. The poultry farm in Brod nad Tichou, which was forced to put down 750,000 hens produced 600,000 eggs daily, putting 18.5 million eggs on the market every month. Dlouhá said that in view of the bird flu outbreaks around Europe it was not clear how fast the laying hens could be replaced.

    The former prime minister and presidential candidate Andrej Babiš, who is being tried on charges of EU fraud delivered his closing speech in Prague’s Municipal Court on Friday. Mr. Babiš said he had done nothing illegal and would not be standing trial today, had he not entered politics.

    The judge is expected to deliver a verdict in the case relating to a CZK 50 million subsidy for the construction of the Stork’s Nest Centre on Monday. The chief prosecutor has proposed a three year suspended sentence and a fine of 10 million crowns.

    Mr. Babiš is suspected of manipulating ownership rights for the Stork’s Nest company, which was part of his multi billion crown empire, so that it could meet EU grant conditions for a small and medium-sized business. The trial follows a seven-year investigation and is at the centre of media attention in view of the fact that Mr. Babiš is one of the hot candidates in the presidential race.
