    The former Czech prime minister, Andrej Babiš, would now win the first round of the presidential election with 27.9 % of the vote. General Petr Pavel would come second with 26.7 %, followed by economist Danuša Nerudová with 24.4 %, according to a survey conducted by the STEM polling agency for CNN Prima News. According to the survey, however, both Pavel and Nerudová would beat Babiš in the second round of elections. STEM says a quarter of voters have not made up their minds who they will vote for in the elections which are scheduled to take place next weekend.

    President Miloš Zeman has said that he has an analysis according to which there is no legal obstacle to his appointing a successor to Pavel Rychetský, head of the Constitutional Court, before his presidential mandate expires. Rychetsky’s term at the head of the Constitutional Court will end in August, while the president’s term in office ends in mid-March, meaning that Zeman would make the appointment several months in advance. The president, who has often been criticized for exceeding the boundaries of his powers, refused to say whether he will make the move.

    President Miloš Zeman will present the country’s highest states distinction, the Order of the White Lion, to Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen before leaving office in March. The president indicated that the Austrian head of state would visit Czechia and accept the award in person. President Zeman also noted that he would like to open a Czech House in Belgrade, Serbia before his term in office expires.

    Analysts expect December’s inflation figure to be between 15.8 and 17.2 percent, the ctk news agency reported. A drop in the price of fuel depressed inflation in December, but the continued rise in food prices worked in the opposite direction. November’s inflation figure was 16.2 percent. The Czech Statistics Office will publish the inflation data for December on Wednesday.

    The Social Democratic Party, which was sidelined from mainstream politics after failing to win seats in Parliament in the last general election,s outlined its future priorities at its weekend conference in Brno.  Its main goal, according to party chair Michal Šmarda, is to present the party as a responsible alternative to the right-wing government and the "populist, nationalist opposition". Šmarda unveiled a plan for the party's return to the limelight, in four stages described as a clean-up, a reboot, new faces and ultimately, a comeback. Šmarda said the first “clean-up” phase, i.e. resolving the financial problems of the debt-ridden party by selling or leasing some of its real estate and slimming down its organizational structure was almost complete.

    Teenage qualifier Linda Noskova’s hopes of winning her first WTA title were dashed by Aryna Sabalenka in Sunday’s final at the Adelaide International in Australia. The 18-year-old Czech lost to Sabalenka from Belarus 3:6 and 6:7. Nevertheless Noskova played the best tournament of her career and moved up in the rankings from 102nd place to the top 60. Earlier the 18-year-old from Vsetin beat top seed and WTA world number 2 Ons Jabeur 6:3, 1:6, 6:3 and knocked out former world number 1 Victoria Azarenka 6:4, 6:7, 7:6.

    More than half of Czech households have been dipping into their savings over the past year due to rising prices, according to a survey by STEM/MARK. Many people reported using their retirement savings, selling their country cottage or other assets to make ends meet. According to the survey results, a full third of respondents have significantly reduced their savings over the past year, although they still have some money left. However, 17.2 percent of respondents say they have used up all their savings. The vast majority, 88 percent, cited inflation as the main cause of their financial problems. Around 8 percent had to rely on their savings after loosing their job and 3 percent as a result of a pay cut.

    The Health Ministry will rename the mobile app Tečka to EZ (e-health) card. It wants to keep Tečka in operation and transform it into a more general application within the process of digitizing healthcare information. The app would serve as a vaccination card and a messaging service by which the holder of Tečka could receive relevant information from the ministry or insurance company. The ministry has already announced a public tender worth 50 million crowns for the operation and further development of the application.

    In addition to casting a vote in the presidential elections on January 13-14, people in some municipalities will vote in local by-elections and local referendums as well. Issues decided in local referendums include the planned construction of a new housing estate in Dobříš, the setting up of wind power plants in the Liberec and Plzeň regions, a ban on gambling in Kladno, or the restoration of the cast-iron spring colonnade in Karlovy Vary.
