The Railway Administration has received a valid building permit for the renovation of Masaryk Railway Station in Prague and construction work can now go ahead, a spokesperson for the organisation announced on Wednesday. Once a contractor has been found, construction should begin sometime during this year.

Plans include the existing number of tracks being expanded from seven to nine, the construction of a new platform, and a direct access point to transfer to metro line B. All platforms, tracks, technology, traction lines and the power supply will undergo reconstruction and barrier-free access will be created with six wheelchair-accessible platforms.

The project is slated for completion in 2026.

All the birds at the large chicken farm in the Plzeň region where a bird flu outbreak was confirmed on Friday will now have to be culled to contain the outbreak, the Czech News Agency reports.

Initially, it was reported that only 120,000 (around a sixth) of the laying hens would have to be culled, which then increased to 220,000 (about a third) on Monday when tests confirmed infection in the second part of the hall. But the virus has since spread to other parts of the farm, and it will thus be necessary to dispose of all of the almost 750,000 laying hens from all three halls of the farm. This constitutes around five percent of all the hens in Czechia. The culling began on Tuesday.

The bird flu epidemic has been spreading throughout Europe for more than a year. Outdoor breeding of poultry has been prohibited in Czechia since December 14.

Soviet-era Russian dissident Viktor Fainberg, one of the eight people who in 1968 risked their life to voice his opposition to the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia, has died at the age of 91.

On August 25th, just four days after the invasion, Fainberg, along with seven other dissidents, gathered on Moscow’s Red Square with banners that read “Hands off Czechoslovakia!” and “Shame to the Invaders!”

He was arrested and locked up in a psychiatric hospital for five years. In 1974, he emigrated to Israel and later resided in France.

The Czech Foreign Ministry expressed “deep sadness” in response to the news of his death, stressing that his legacy was still relevant even in today’s turbulent times.

The Czech Republic’s state budget ended 2022 with a deficit of CZK 360.4 billion, the third worst result in the country’s history, Finance Minister Zbyněk Stanjura said on Tuesday.

The government originally planned a deficit of CZK 280 billion, but amended the state budget to CZK 375 billion in the autumn due to unexpected expenditures, including pension hikes, an energy saving tariff for households and increased social benefits.

Last year, Czechia saw a deficit of CZK 419.7 billion, while this year the state plans to run a deficit of CZK 295 billion.

Around five percent of the roughly five million hens in Czechia will be culled due to the bird flu outbreak at a chicken farm in the Plzeň region. According to the Czech-Moravian Poultry Breeders’ Union, this shouldn’t affect the quantity of eggs on the market or the price for the time being.

The outbreak of bird flu at the farm in the village of Brod nad Tichou, the largest in Czechia so far, was confirmed on Friday and has so far infected around 220,000 of the 742,000 laying hens. At least four million eggs from the farm will also have to be disposed of.

The bird flu epidemic has been spreading throughout Europe for more than a year now. Outdoor breeding of poultry has been prohibited in Czechia since December 14.

The unseasonably warm spell continues to break temperature records around the country. Temperature records for January 2 were registered at 90 out of 162 stations that have been monitoring for 30 years and more.

The highest temperature was recorded in Zlaté Hory in the Jesenice region, where it reached 18.7 degrees Celsius. The unusually warm weather, which is caused by the hot air flowing into Europe from northwest Africa, is expected to last in the coming days.
