Price of eggs expected to rise further due to bird flu outbreaks

The price of eggs will go up as a result of the bird flu outbreaks which have led to the culling of hundreds of thousands of hens in Czechia, Gabriela Dlouhá, chairwoman of the Poultry Breeders' Union told the ctk news agency. She said consumers do not need to fear a shortage of eggs since they would be imported, but at a higher cost. The losses incurred have been considerable. The poultry farm in Brod nad Tichou, which was forced to put down 750,000 hens produced 600,000 eggs daily, putting 18.5 million eggs on the market every month. Dlouhá said that in view of the bird flu outbreaks around Europe it was not clear how fast the laying hens could be replaced.
