Bohumil Mazánek, a former ambassador to Lithuania, has been appointed Czechia’s first ambassador in Kosovo, the Foreign Ministry announced in a press release on Tuesday.

The former South Serbian province of Kosovo declared independence in 2008. The then government of Mirek Topolánek recognised its sovereignty the same year and Czechia’s official position has remained unchanged since then. Kosovo has gradually been recognised by more than 100 countries, some of which later reversed their decision.

In total, the Czech government approved 26 diplomats to head Czech embassies abroad. They were all authorised by President Petr Pavel.

The Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday night that it had no knowledge of any Czechs having failed to find return flights from Greece, which has been hit by wildfires. The ministry’s director general for legal and consular affairs, Martin Smolek, said that the situation on the island of Rhodes remained serious but had, according to local officials, been stabilised.

As of Monday evening, Czech travel agencies said there were around 4,500 tourists from Czechia on Rhodes. Of that number 1,000 arrived on Monday, while roughly 800 others left, Mr. Smolek said.

Some Czechs returning from Greece have criticised the standard of communication they received from tourist agencies in connection with the fires.

The minister of the interior, Vít Rakušan, says large fires in the countryside in Czechia and elsewhere in Europe will not be unusual in the future. He made the comment on Monday at a news conference marking the first anniversary of a blaze in Bohemian Switzerland in the north of the country, which was the worst such event in modern Czech history.

Mr. Rakušan said it was necessary to employ more modern equipment and techniques when fighting forest fires. He said the use of aircraft had proven effective last year, which was why the state had rented two Black Hawk with buckets capable of carrying 3,000 litres of water.

Over 6,000 firefighters fought the blaze in Bohemian Switzerland for around three weeks.

Two special repatriation planes brought around 450 clients of Czech tourism agencies back from the Greek island of Rhodes on Sunday night, while another plane was on its way on Monday afternoon. The news was reported by Czech Television, who quoted Martin Smolek, director general for legal and consular affairs at the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Government planes are not being sent to pick up tourists on the island, which has been hit by wildfires. In addition the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not for now issuing a general warning not to travel to Rhodes as local fire services report the situation is improving, Mr. Smolek said.

Meanwhile the ministry has also issued a warning in connection with wildfires on another Greek island, Corfu. It has also been hit by extensive fires.

The regional government in Pardubice has tightened the Chvaletice power plant's emission limits for nitrogen oxide and mercury, according to the findings of the Czech News Agency. The decision is final and the power plant has not appealed against it.

The Chvaletice plant has been seeking an exemption from mercury and nitrogen oxide emission limits since 2018, but it has so far failed to obtain one due to strong opposition from environmental groups. In the past, the brown coal plant had threatened to stop production if it did not obtain an exemption.
