Czech gas storage facilities are now 90 percent full and contain over 3.1 billion cubic metres of gas, the minister of industry and trade, Jozef Síkela, said on Twitter. Mr. Síkela said domestic gas reserves were at a record level, even without gas imports from Russia. He said this meant Czechia had met a European Union obligation to strengthen energy security in advance of next winter.

Last week the minister said Czechia had not imported any gas from Russia in the first half of 2023, with all imports coming via Germany.

The country began seeking alternative suppliers after Russia launched a war on Ukraine last year.

One of the main issues for the European Union in the coming years will be Ukraine and its accession to the bloc, says the Czech minister for European affairs, Martin Dvořák. Speaking in an interview with the Czech News Agency on Saturday, Mr. Dvořák also said that the Western Balkans must not be forgotten; he said as an honorary citizen of Kosovo it was an important issue to him personally.

The minister said institutional changes would probably need to be made in connection with further EU enlargement.

Mr. Dvořák said some Balkan states feared that their European ambitions were being sidelined when Ukraine moved significantly closer to EU membership following the Russian invasion. However, even older EU members realise that the Balkans cannot be lost, he said.

Working in conjunction with Italian Carabinieri, Czech military police officers have begun serving on an international mission in Kosovo, the Czech News Agency wrote on Saturday. The Czech officers’ task is to help stabilise the situation in a territory where ethnic unrest between Kosovo and Serbia still persists.

They are part of the international specialised unit MSU KFOR (Multinational Specialised Unit Kosovo Forces). During their time in Kosovo, the Czechs will primarily be involved in patrolling the operational area and monitoring the situation in the territory. In the event of protests, they will be called on to employ their crowd control skills, the Czech Army said on its website.
