Last year some 45,400 marriages were registered in the Czech Republic, about 9,500 fewer than in 2019, due to the coronavirus pandemic. It was the fourth-lowest number of marriages since 1918, the Czech Statistical Office (ČSÚ) said.

As of Monday, indoor catering can also reopen in the Czech Republic, the recently reappointed Health Minister Adam Vojtěch said following Friday’s government meeting. The cabinet also agreed that swimming pools, saunas and wellness facilities can resume operations.

When inside cafés, pubs and restaurants, the same anti-coronavirus hygiene measures should apply as in the outside area. This means having proof of a current negative test result, vaccination or recovery from the virus. In addition, at most four people can be seated per table.

Also as of Monday, music, game, dance or social clubs and discos will be able to open although live music remains prohibited indoors. Also, unlike for restaurants and other services, visitors must have antigen or PCR tests performed by a healthcare professional, not self-tests, Vojtěch said.

Several dozen Russian diplomats, embassy staff and their families are due to leave the Czech Republic by May 31 under an agreement on “parity representation” between Prague and Moscow.

The reduction in staff was triggered by a diplomatic row over the Czech claim that Russian intelligence agents were behind a series of deadly blasts at a munitions depot in Moravia in 2014. The Czech Republic expelled 18 Russian agents from the country within 48 hours and another 63 diplomats and staff were given until the end of May to leave the country.

Under the agreement Prague and Moscow are bound to reduce the number of embassy staff at their respective representations to 7 diplomats, 25 administrative and technical workers and 19 local support staff by May 31. Moscow is dispatching special flights for its employees at the weekend.
